In late December I up-cycled my late Grandmothers sideboard cabinet - she had passed away a few weeks earlier and although I had gifted most of her belongings to charity this was too large. I found it very therapeutic and loved seeing the final transformation so I decided to experiment on a few more pieces. I posted a few of the finished pieces on social media and the feedback I received was really positive. The more pieces I did, the braver I became and the feedback just blew me away. I was noticed by one of the largest furniture upcycling paint suppliers in the UK (Frenchic) and they asked if they could feature one of my items on their website!). Over the past few weeks so many people have told me I should start this as a business - I listed my work on Facebook market place and they all sold immediately. There is a real joy in furniture upcycling - most of the items I do are destined for landfill so to be able to intercept it and make it beautiful again. There's a really sustainability behind the concept - it reduces the need for using new or raw materials to produce new furniture and as such conserves global resources. I also make a point of buying as much as I can from local charities which also supports their fantastic causes.
I have been offered some workshop space free of charge until I can get the business established and off the ground and I also think there are fantastic business growth opportunities by providing workshops and tutorials to people wanting to upcycle their own furniture, becoming an authorised paint supplier, offering commissions and I would also like to reupholster furniture too to expand my product offerings.
This is way beyond a hobby for me, this is a passion. I have incorporated a Ltd company and also secured the domain: againstthegrainfurniture.com (I chose the name Against The Grain Furniture as my work has a more modern and contemporary look than the usual ‘shabby chic’ trend which is synonymous with upcycling)
Your support would go towards my minimal start up costs but predominantly me purchasing a small van so I can collect and delivery my furniture and also building up stock
Here's some examples of my work and examples of the feedback I've received. You can see more (and how I’ve progressed) if you visit my Instagram grid sorry about the Instagram handle - I'll make sure I set up a professional one!)
