To help part fund an additional Blood Bikes vehicle to allow us to expand our free transportation services across the NHS in Scotland.

New stretch target

We  would like to expand the service we currently operate in NHS Lothian, Fife, Forth Valley and Scottish Borders.  We would use additional funding to expand further our service in these areas.

Other areas in Scotland are in need of a Blood Bikes Service.  Our long term aim is to provide our free of charge service to such areas e.g. Tayside, Lanarkshire.  This needs funding for more vehicles as well as a concentrated effort to recruit the advanced trained motorcycle riders the group requires.

Blood Bikes Scotland is a registered charity (SC049314) run under the National Association of Blood Bikes (NABB). Currently operating ten specially adapted, high-visibility motorcycles, an electric scooter and a car, our small team of 100 dedicated volunteers provide a professional, free urgent transportation service to Lothian, Borders, Fife and Forth Valley NHS hospitals and trusts, outside of normal office hours, when their internal courier service is unavailable and the NHS rely on expensive taxis or couriers.

We transfer urgent medical supplies, blood samples, baby milk, medication or test samples between hospitals and other sites. One of the benefits of our service is that we can courier medication / documentation to a patient’s home which allows them to leave the hospital earlier which potentially frees up beds for the hospital earlier in the day.

In 2019 we have already undertaken over 4000 runs across the 4 regions.  We estimate we will save the NHS over £100,000 of taxi and courier costs in 2019.  These savings can be used by the NHS to help patients who require services in the front line.

For this project we are looking  to improve our service with the NHS with longer hours, more volunteers on shift, as required.  In order to improve all our services however we require additional vehicles to the fleet and our fundraising efforts are continuous. Availability and timely service are critical to our continued success.

From monies raised we would put this towards the purchase of vehicles.  A new motorcycle cost is £19,000. This includes the livery and carrying tray, satnav, dashcams.  A new car is similar priced.  We also require to kit out our volunteers with our uniform of Hi-Viz jackets, polo tops etc.  We receive no funding from the government or NHS and all funds we receive are through our own fundraising efforts.  Every penny we receive goes towards the charity and no-one in the charity receives any compensation.

We would really appreciate your support.  A £25 pledge buys us a tank of fuel,  £50 Kits out a volunteer,  £100 pledge buys a dash camera, £1000 pledge is insurance for one bike for one year.
