At Travelling Light, we run weekly youth theatre groups for young people aged 4-19, as well as one specialist group for young people with additional needs. Our Youth Theatre is the beating heart of Travelling Light's participatory work, and we are very proud to welcome around 70 local young people through our doors each week. Through this service we aim to:
- empower young people to realise their potential succeed and achieve
- serve our local community in Lawrence Hill, Bristol as a unique centre of learning for young people from diverse cultural and social backgrounds
- enable young people to make a positive difference to the world and be recognised for their achievements
Everyone is welcome to youth theatre; we create a safe space where young people feel a sense of belonging and have a platform to hear and be heard. This video is a message from our Youth Board, made up from our groups for ages 7-19 about what the service means to them. They highlighted the words Act, Play and Be Yourself.
We are located in Lawrence Hill, the most deprived ward in Bristol and among the 10% most deprived in England. 79.1% of children in the local area live in income deprived households. Income deprived households are less likely to be able to participate in mainstream social, cultural and economic activities and often feel socially excluded. The majority of our participants live in the local area. Each year we need raise around £1000 to keep youth theatre running, keep costs low and accessible and our doors open to all.
We have reached our initial target of £800, and with £200 we can take these young people on a theatre trip, with subsidised tickets and travel!
With your help, we can reach our target and continue to work with these remarkable young people.
