We have operated a community gym in North Tyneside since 2017, we have a small but experienced team of instructors who support and develop health and fitness across the community. We have identified through conversations and requests from local residents and the wider community that adults aged 50+ understand the importance of physical activity, however they lack the confidence, facilities and sometimes ability to use mainstream gyms and classes. We have worked with Parkinsons UK for over a year debeloping the exercise framework and this is where our idea for Active Aging came from. The project vision is to offer a range of accessible, affordable, fun activities that will encourage older adults to take that step to improve their activity levels and social environment. Our activites will not only improve activity participation, we wish to develop this further and make the activities social events, where participants can stay oin site afterwards and have a coffee, a chat and get further advice and support as well as offering events and days out for example.
The funds raised will be used to cover core costs such as new equipment and room hire, we will be providing staffing in-kind. The funds will also enable us to sustain the services offered under Active Aging long term by covering volunteer costs, training and sourcing opportubnities to take the project out in to the community to ensure those harder to reach residents can be engaged.
