Born in a violent and neglected favela community in Rio de Janeiro, Alan Duarte suffered immense personal tragedy. Until now, he has never seen a male family member grow old and die from natural causes. However, he dreams of finding salvation and building a better future for his son and his community through his boxing project Abraço Campeão.
Inspired by Alan’s story, filmmakers Ben Holman and Neirin Jones decided to make a film celebrating his hard work. 'The Good Fight' has just been shortlisted for prestigous the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, and Ben and Neirin want the film’s star to be there. Alan is the film, and the festival provides the kind of international attention and opportunity he needs to promote his work and a platform to expand. He would have the chance to take part in Q&As and presentations explaining the motivation and inspirations behind his work.
The media spotlight rarely reaches the corners of Rio de Janeiro's Complexo de Alemao where Alan lives and the Tribeca platform is a once in a lifetime opportunity for Alan. A chance to not only revel in some long overdue recognition for his work, but also to capitalise on the media attention to attarct much needed sponsors for his work. Being able to meet influencial people face-to-face, building relationships and support that has the potential to transform Abraco Campeao and lives of the young people in his community - to which he has dedicated his life. Without any salarys and with very little support, Alan and his team currently work 6 days a week to provide boxing, kickboxing classes, citizen classes and the occasional excursion for over 100 young people.
Please give generously to help make this opportunity possible for Alan. We hope to surpasses the total required in order that we can also provide some much needed financial support directly to the project and it's participants. Our financial structure and targets are detailed below.

Alan Duarte, cria do Complexo do Alemao, tem uma historia pessoal impactante. Até agora, nunca viu um familiar masculino crescer e morrer de causas naturais. A pesar (e por causa) desse passado, ele sonha em construir um futuro melhor para seu filho e sua comunidade através de seu projeto de boxe Abraço Campeão.
Inspirados na história do Alan, os cineastas Ben Holman e Neirin Jones decidiram fazer um filme comemorando seu trabalho. 'The Good Fight' acaba de ser selecionado para o prestigioso Tribeca Film Festival em Nova York, e o Ben e o Neirin querem que o estrela do filme esteja la. Alan é o filme, e o festival fornece uma oportunidade para ganhar atenção internacional, para promover seu trabalho e uma plataforma para o projeto se expandir. Ele teria a chance de participar de workshops para apresentar a motivação e as inspirações por trás do seu trabalho.
O foco da mídia raramente chega aos cantos do Complexo do Alemão e a plataforma do Tribeca é uma oportunidade única para o Alan. Uma chance de não só ver sua história inspiradora no big screen e ganhar o reconhecimento merecido do seu trabalho, sino também para aproveitar da atenção da imprensa para fechar os patrocinios necesarios para manter o sucesso do projeto. Alan esta dedicando a sua vida inteira ao projeto: Abraço Campeão não tem funcionarios pagos e sobrevive com muito pouco apoio financeiro. Mesmo assim, Alan e sua equipe trabalham 6 dias por semana para oferecer aulas de boxe e kickboxing, aulas de cidadania e algumas excursoês culturais, para mais de 100 jovens.
A gente esta dependendo da generosidade de voces para conseguir que o Alan va para Tribeca. Esperamos ultrapassar o total necessário para que também possamos oferecer algum apoio financeiro diretamente ao projeto e seus participantes. Complexo do Alemão
Complexo do Alemão is one of Rio de Janeiro's most deprived favelas. 40% of its residents live on less than half a minimum wage (US$128) a month, almost 1 in 10 households have four or more people per bedroom, and almost 1 in 12 people over the age of 15 is illiterate. This in a city which has just hosted the World Cup and the Olympic Games.
When the government announced a plan to pacify Rio’s favelas in 2008, there was hope that the situation would improve. In 2010, amazing footage of drug dealers escaping Complexo do Alemão through the forests was broadcast nationwide, and people started to believe that real change was possible.
The reality has been different. Complexo do Alemaão was the beginning of the end for the pacification police. They never truly got control of the sprawling favela, one of the biggest in Rio. In 2015, there were shootouts on 100 consecutive days in the favela. One of those shootouts resulted in the death of Eduardo de Jesus, a 10 year-old boy. Police shot him at point blank range thinking his phone was a gun. Most countries in the world have a lower murder rate than the level of Police killings in the community of Complexo de Alemão.
In the middle of all this is Abraço Campeão. Founded by Alan Duarte, who has his own story of violence – 9 family members have been killed – it is a boxing club that aims to help young people in the community realise their potential. Alan was himself a student at another communities boxing club, and saw how it had the power to transform lives. Now he wants to give something back to his own community. (Project targets below)
Complexo do Alemão
O Complexo do Alemão é uma das favelas mais carentes do Rio de Janeiro. 40% dos seus residentes vivem com menos de metade do salário mínimo (US $ 128) por mês, quase 1 em cada 10 domicílios tem quatro ou mais pessoas por quarto e quase 1 em cada 12 pessoas com mais de 15 anos é analfabeta. Isso em uma cidade que acaba de receber a Copa do Mundo e os Jogos Olímpicos.
Quando o governo anunciou o plano para pacificar as favelas do Rio em 2008, havia esperança de que a situação melhorasse. Em 2010, imagens impactantes de traficantes que escapavam do Complexo Alemão através das florestas foram transmitidas por todo o país, e os cariocas começaram a acreditar que uma mudança real era possível. A realidade tem sido diferente. O Complexo do Alemão foi o começo do fim para a polícia de pacificação. Eles nunca conseguiram pacificar a favela, uma das maiores do Rio. Em 2015, houve tiroteios em 100 dias consecutivos na favela. Um desses tiroteios resultou na morte de Eduardo de Jesus, um menino de 10 anos. A polícia atirou nele pensando que seu telefone era uma arma. A taxa de “autos de Resistencia” no Complexo do Alemão é maior do que a taxa de homicídios para a maioria dos países do mundo.
No meio de tudo isto está o Abraço Campeão. Fundada por Alan Duarte, que tem sua própria história de violência - 9 membros da família foram mortos - é um clube de boxe que visa ajudar os jovens na comunidade a realizar seu potencial. Alan ja foi beneficiario de outro clube de boxe, e viu como ele tinha o poder de transformar vidas. Agora ele quer fazer algo para a sua própria comunidade.
Crowdfunding
£1,500 would give Alan the opportunity to spend a few days at the festival and capitalise on the attention and interest it will bring.
- Flights from Rio De Janeiro are £850 today. We are anticipating at the time of purchase will be more expensive.
- Alan needs to pay a fee of US$100 just for a visa. This is effectively an entire months living wage for the average person from his community.
- Acommadation, food and transport in NYC for 5 days & nights we have estimated £500.
- With some spending money so he can pick up a few things for himself, his family and the young people he works with at Abraço Campeão.
As soon as we hit our initial target we will be immediately resetting the goal to our main target £3000.
We would like to take this opportunity of raising some money to go one step further to make an immediate impact on day to day running and training of the extended 'family' at Abraco Campeao. We asked Alan directly what he would like to do with the additional funds if we are able to raise them. His top priorities are:
- Boxing Equipment. The gloves, bags and just about every bit of equipment Alan has is second hand, tired and overused. Which is not ideal, with many young kids already living in unsanitory conditions at home, it is imperitive for Alan to both inforce and educate kids on health and saftey issues.
- Event in the community. Alan would like to hold a community event, Abraço Campeão needs to grow in order to be effective. Events like this build support from within the community and attract people to become involved. Alan would like to hold the first ever 'Alemao Boxing Championship'. He would also like to be able to screen "The good Fight' at the event, so that the community he lives for can understand better his story and his aspirations for Abraço Campeão.
- 8 - 12 year old classes. With enough money Alan would like to hire another boxing coach, this would free his time to run a dedicated class for 8 - 12 year olds. Currently Alan caters for every age group with young children at every session. This mixing of age groups is not an ideal way to teach. Alan has also identified this age group as being the most critical and venerable. He would like to dedicate time to working specifically with this age group so he can guide as many young lives as possible away from the extremely violent and corrupt alternative role models there are in his community.

Assim que atingimos o nosso objectivo inicial, vamos redefinir a meta para US$4500. Gostaríamos também de aproveitar esta oportunidade de arrecadar algum dinheiro para dar um passo adiante para ter um impacto imediato no dia-a- dia do Abraço Campeão. Perguntámos ao Alan o que ele gostaria de fazer com os fundos adicionais que a gente consiga captar.
Suas principais prioridades são:
- Equipamentos de boxe. As luvas, sacos e outros equipamentos do Abraço Campeão são de segunda mão e esse tipo de coisa acaba desanimando novos beneficiaries do projeto.
- Um evento comunitario. Alan gostaria de realizar um evento comunitário; eventos como este constroem apoio de dentro da comunidade e atraem os jovens. Alan gostaria de realizar o primeiro Campeonato Alemão de Boxe. Ele também gostaria de de exibir "The Good Fight" no evento, para que a comunidade em que ele vive possa entender melhor sua história e suas aspirações para o Abraço Campeão.
- Aulas para meninos e meninas de 8 a 12 anos. Alan gostaria de contratar outro treinador de boxe: isso iria liberar seu tempo para abrir uma classe para jovens de 8 - 12 anos de idade. Atualmente Alan atende a todas as faixas etárias com crianças pequenas em cada sessão. Esta mistura de faixas etarias não é a maneira ideal de ensinar. A traves dessas aulas ele visa uma estrategia de prevencao de involvimento em crime, a traves de exemplos positives e foco no progresso escolar.
