Aylesbury Youth Motor Project is a Registered Charity which offers industry recognised qualifications governed by the Institute of Motoring Industry (IMI) and Awarding Body Consortium (ABC) to disadvantaged young people from the age of 12 to 19 within the Bucks County. The main criteria are those that are Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEETs) or those who are at risk from NEETs in mainstream schools and Pupil Referral Units and we also teach groups of students from Special Education Need departments and schools.
As well as these educational establishments, we also liaise with other local agencies including Adviza (previously Connexions) and Youth Offending Teams who assist in supporting the development and training progression of disadvantaged young people with diverse needs into educational attainment, further education and employment.
Due to minimal funds the classroom has not had a clean up in a few years, the most that’s happened is a few posters have been put up, although this year we have decided to try change this and seek a source of donations and designers to help us continue to inspire our students to enjoy where they choose to learn.
On arrival the students make their way to the classroom for the start of the session by climbing the stairs see picture (a) to the classroom. There is a distinct lack of character within the learning area see pictures (b) (c) (d) and this needs to be brought into touch with the characters of our staff and learners.
We would like a classroom and stairwell that is a bright, inviting and interesting place where students love to learn; we are a motor vehicle training centre, so things to do with motor vehicle can be incorporated into the design, although at present the classroom is drab and weary looking and in need of a cleanup in order to carry this out.
The students who use the classroom have particular learning needs which can be supported by attending our project and learning in a more practical environment; our classroom helps the students to overcome a major aversion to theory work and develops a willingness to continue to study. The classroom also doubles up as an examination room, so the ideas we have for a design would involve graffiti pictures of motor vehicle parts, for fun, colour and appealing to the young and an application of labels that can be attached to support learning and removed when exams are taking place.
The classroom is also used for teaching and assessing and completing any paperwork for the schools and awarding bodies
We have a small kitchen area that is used by staff and students to prepare drinks and food. The students use the desks in the classroom to eat at and we would eventually like to add a breakfast bar and stools so that the kitchen and eating area is contained and away from the teaching and learning area. At present it will just be part of the refurbishment and be cleaned and painted, giving us a base to work with
There is a floor plan of the upstairs of Aylesbury Youth Motor Project as part of the picture which contains the Stairwell, Learning, Teaching and Kitchen area.
I have priced up the items required to paint the walls still using the same base colour and renew the flooring and itemed these in the table below, I will also attach a document containing costs within online shopping baskets:
Paint - Emulsion
Paint - Gloss
The cost of £695.12 would allow us to clean up the areas to make a blank canvas for a design specific to our learning environment and kitchen area by painting the walls, skirting boards and window sills and renew the floor area.
We will be looking to source separate donations to cover the cost of the design on the wall and have ideas of approaching the local body shop businesses to donate paint and the local schools/colleges to see whether any students would be interested in participating in a project to carry out our design and the cost of materials to adapt the kitchen area.
