During COVID19 lockdown and as we slowly return to some kind of normal, the number of deaths due to domestic violence and abuse have more than doubled. Compared to other years, more people are being murdered by their partner or ex partner, and we suspect that more people are taking their own life due to living in fear of domestic abuse. These facts are shocking.
We are seeing evidence of this in our service as our referrals have also spiked and as we rally to ensure that every family who turns to us for support, is able to get that support.
We've had to change the way in which we work and although we are not making face to face visits with bereaved families at the moment, we are keeping in regular contact via phone, messaging and video calls.
In addition to making sure that families understand the processes that take place after the death of their loved one, and supporting them through some important decision making, we are also supporting some families who have used us in the past too, as the isolation of lockdown has reignited some anxieties and trauma.
In a nutshell we provide specialist and expert advocacy and peer support to these families and we have our work cut out right now. We are a small team, covering the whole of England. We keep our costs low by all staff working from home no offices or expensive overheads. However the one thing we do need, is those staff members. We need to ensure that our Advocates have enough paid hours to meet the needs of our new and existing families. We also need our small admin team to help manage fundraising and the back end administration of taking referrals and ensuring families get allocated to an advocate in a timely manner.
We would welcome any donation you are able to make. Every penny goes to ensuring families get the support they need in the period after the death of their loved one, at the point they need it most and for as long as they feel they need it.
