by Warren School Association in Lowestoft, England, United Kingdom

As a registered charity since 1984, Warren Association is a small but dedicated group of parents and staff who work extremely hard to raise funds and hold social events in an effort to provide additional money so that the school can maintain and also build upon their resources and curriculum.

Over the years, we have been able to successfully fundraise and contribute towards many varied projects, equipment, and experiences, which we are proud to say, have played a major part in improving learning opportunities for so many of the school's population. For example, a swimming pool, school minibus, a sensory room, computers, music media equipment, specialised PE and sensory resources, variety of school trips, presents at Christmas, pantomimes and theatre productions, plus play equipment for the young children in the Early Years Nursery and Reception garden.

Our current project for Warren School, 'A Special Playground for a Special School' is our most ambitious to date and will require funding of £188,000 in order to transform the main playground into a specialised outdoor learning environment. As the number of learners on the roll is ever increasing, the school has already maximised its use of all possible space within the building and there are no more opportunities left to extend classrooms or site mobile classrooms.

Our intention, therefore, is to create a unique, inclusive, sensory-rich, and challenging outdoor provision, accessible for all learners regardless of individual need and disability, with the means to be used as an extension to the school's curriculum.

We are looking to establish distinct areas such as Physical (swings, climbing frames, spinners, trampoline, roundabout, and hanging bars), Creative (imaginative areas, creative camp corner, musical panels, and rainbow light panels ), Science (sensory garden, landscaping, textured surfaces, and walkways), Social and Emotional (calm area, 'break-out' spaces, dens, outdoor classroom), plus outdoor furniture, fencing, and storage.

By designing the whole area into different learning zones, there would be endless ways for learners to further develop their problem-solving skills, emotional feelings, memory, sensory processing, communication, imagination, social interaction, mobility, and independence.

We have sourced quotes and designs and we are working with Timotay Playscapes an award-winning playground and play space provider. Together we have finalised our design concept which maximises our play and educational benefits but also focuses on the natural and sensory exploratory elements which our learners will benefit from. As you can imagine, the cost of such specialised resources is not cheap! Neither can we afford to accomplish this transformation all at once. We are therefore aiming to achieve this project via a phased approach.

At present, we believe that we have raised enough money to cover any initial costs and we have the capacity to carry out on-going small time fund raising ventures such as Quiz Nights, Christmas Fayre, Recycling and sponsored events with your ongoing and much appreciated support.

However, as we look towards the future post Covid19 we will need to start figuring out how we can move forward with funding through businesses, charities, and grant schemes, if we are ever going to fulfill our ambition for our learners. We would love businesses to get involved and have your companies logos and business names on individual pieces of equipment.
