Let's create a studio space and help get my art business back on its feet post-pandemic.

Welcome to my Crowdfunder! My name is Sue Pownall I’m an artist, illustrator and art tutor. Here I am in my previous studio with my furry assistant.

Why I am doing this.

Over the last few years, I have worked hard to grow my client base. I have lovely people who repeatedly attend the workshops I deliver and others who return to commission artwork.

However, like many, my business has been impacted by the pandemic and this has meant that workshops and private classes got cancelled and people have not been purchasing art. Consequently, my income has plummeted and I have had to give up my home and studio space.

Now, I’m very grateful to be making this lovely little Bures house my home for my furry assistant and I, but there is currently not a space for a studio, so I cannot continue working.

Why you should support my project.

It’s true that artists are creative no matter where they are.  Seeing things and the desire to capture them runs in our veins.  I love to sketch any time and any place…

1629539474_sketching.jpgand I do, whether it's standing in a car park to capture a building or in the pub listening to live music  However, for commissions and exhibition work, I need a dedicated space to create art along with storage for my artwork and art supplies.

The over used adage of the struggling artist wasn’t true for me when I was able to supplement my income with supply teaching, but that hasn’t been possible during lock-down. Some artistic people prospered through lock-down, for example, with online content.  I tested those waters too, expanding my Etsy shop and running online classes, but it doesn’t suit my personal hands-on style, so it has been tough, as it has been for many others.

I'm passionate about creating art, so I’m looking for a hand-up, rather than a handout and I’ll be grateful of any and all support, no matter how small.

In return for your kindness, I am offering a number of rewards. Beyond these rewards, if you take a look at my portfolio on my website, suepownallartist.co.uk , you might even like to commission a work of your own.

The best part of this project is that no matter how much or little I raise, I will find a solution to my studio and enhance my new living/working situation.

Having a creative outlet is essential for health and wellbeing.  Art is the way I express myself in life and thus vital for my health too. I am acutely aware of supporting others in developing their passions too, through teaching and mentoring.

The more I can create, the more I can support others through arranging events to raise money like my Unicef Fundraiser (see below), through offering course places at a subsidised rate to pay it forward, supporting other local businesses through my patronage and more.

This pic was taken of my lovely students whilst I was teaching at the Tabor Centre For Physically Handicapped Adults.

To summarise, this project is a personal request for support to re-build my business at my new compact home.  In the same way a plumber needs tools to work, I need a studio.  A shedio is the best compromise given my current situation. Any support you feel able to offer is truly appreciated, whether it is a £1 or more.

Meet the team:

Degas Furry assistant. Seen here at our new home, she loves to greet students, help with paperwork, shredding is a speciality, and time management/mental health manager, making sure I take breaks away from the drawing board to play or go for walks.

Who am I?

I'm an international exhibiting artist producing commissioned drawings and paintings for private collectors. Plus, I’m an illustrator. Clients include the National Trust for Stowe and Bourne Mill properties, and Gemelli Press. Also, I’m an event organiser, art tutor (private & group), and urban sketcher.

My art is filled with nature and expressed in watercolour and ink. The natural world, gardens and diverse cultures are recurring themes in my art. While realistic in nature, my work represents my interpretation of what I see. Originally a pen and ink artist more often colour enters into my work in the form of watercolours or acrylics.

I have always worked in art, having attended North Essex School of Art, Colchester, then trained as a graphic designer at Plymouth College of Art. I then worked as a designer for many years, but my first love of drawing never left me, so in 2014 I set up my art business, Sue Pownall Artist.
