What is Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)? 

Sudden Cardiac Arrest kills approximately 100,000 people a year in the UK. It is the UK’s biggest Killer! But there is a widespread lack of awareness of its incidence and significance.  Cardiac Arrest does not discriminate – it can strike anyone, of any age, anytime, anywhere. It has no warning signs and 75% or three quarters of those cardiac arrests will occur outside of a hospital i.e. in the community, with the only chance of the victim’s survival being the prompt reaction of bystander witnesses.

Defibrillation is the only effective treatment of cardiac arrest but without early defibrillation within the first 5 minutes of collapse, less than 5% of casualties will survive.  If bystanders apply a defibrillator quickly, the chance of survival dramatically improves to over 70%.  If layperson or bystander rescuers do not apply an AED before the arrival of paramedics it is unlikely that medical aid would be able to make any difference.

What is an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)? 

An AED is a portable, lightweight & easy to use device which can be used by trained or untrained personnel to help save a victim from SCA. The device works by delivering therapy through the chest to the heart of a sufferer of sudden cardiac arrest. An AED is the only effective treatment which can make the difference between life or death when dealing with a SCA victim coaching the user via voice & visual prompts through a step by step process at the users pace. The AED analyses the heart rhythm of a person to establish whether or not a shock is needed, this process is full automated and means no decisions are made by the user. The AED’s we place are fully automatic devices.

AEDdonate's mission is to give the West Midlands Ambulance Trust ‘Public Access Defibrillator’ (PAD) scheme more Defibrillators.

We will achieve this by working together to raise the funds for up to 25 AED’s in and around Wolverhampton.

This means that if someone has a cardiac arrest then when 999 is dialled the operator will be able to guide the person directly to their nearest AED, the AED will talk them through how to use it and with the help of the operator advising on CPR the patients chance of survival will be dramatically increased.

By giving Schools, Pubs, Clubs and Communities the opportunity to fundraise for an AED which can then placed onto the PAD scheme, and safeguard their local community from the UK's biggest killer: Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). By enabling AEDs to be fundraised for, we can work together to minimise SCAs and save lives. 

Ordinary people can take extraordinary action to save the life of someone having a sudden cardiac arrest by applying an AED.
