Funding  proposal: Book and art prize:

The Sculpture of TB Huxley Jones FRBS  - An Essex Artist

Its time for Essex to take pride in this artist !

The small parish of Broomfield, near Chelmsford in Essex can enjoy two artists who have achieved  international success . Grayson Perry (potter)and TB Huxley Jones (sculptor). Whilst Grayson is Omni present in British Culture (and rightfully so), Huxley Jones has been overlooked since his death in 1968.

My crowd funding idea  is to turn the research that I have carried out on T B Huxley Jones, sculptor in 2013-14 into a biography of the artist. This publication would be unique as there have been no previous publications on the artist. The book will be a coffee table style, easy read book rich with new illustrations and photographs  of his work, bringing his contribution to British sculpture to life.

The project has two parts to it.

Part 1: The first is turn the research on the artist into a piece of writing that may be published.

Part 2: The money raised from the sales of the book run will be used to finance a small art prize in the artists name for a student under the age of 18/or a series of sculpture courses at Broomfield village hall open to local students under 18 years old.

So why crowd funding?

In an interview in 1949 to the Essex Newsman paper Huxley Jones was quoted as saying:

"Great art has always sprung from the life of the people, and does not belong to any one period of time or any one group of people . The only good tradition is one which builds on the best of the past".

Independent publishing has never been easier.

Rather than place this project with an academic and publishing house I have decided to try and bring his story to life  through the people of Essex, who, with small  financial contributions can turn the rough drafts of  illustrations and writing of the research phase into something polished, credible and worthy of the artist.

So using his archive of work and his biography we can create a new piece of writing and support a developing artist through the sale of the book.

About the artist:

He was awarded the Rome scholarship for sculpture in 1934. A founder member and president of the society of portrait sculptors and served on the committee and as Vice president of the Royal Society of British Sculptors.

He was an inspiring tutor at: The Royal college of Art Aberdeen Grays College, And Mid Essex Technical College school of art .

Despite producing major public works that can still be enjoyed today such as

  • The award wining Joy of life fountain in Hyde Park
  • The BBC Television Television fountain at BBC television Centre White city
  • The Statue of David Livingstone at the Royal Geographical Society Headquarters
  • The Quirky interpretation of St peter at Chelmsford Cathedral
  • The reclining figure Fountain at Hornsey Library
  • The award winning Mother and Child Fountain Chelmsford

      the artist remains anonymous.

Why do we need funding?

Professionalism:

This needs to be purchased.

Although the researcher has produced roughs drafts of the chapters including the text and graphic design for free, the project needs to move to the next level of professionalism.

Editor: The rough text requires editing and shaping into something lively.

Commissioning  and copyright:  Commissioning of  new illustrations and  photograph. The copyright on images requires paying.

Book layout: A  graphic designer is required to piece this all together.

Printing costs: The  costs of printing of the book need to be met. And this is why we require your support

So whats in it for you?

  • Firstly ,help bring a forgotten artists back to the publics attention.
  • Secondly you will support the development of an artist through a bursary from the sale of the book.
