Jersey Girls Commonwealth Games Bid

Jersey Girls Commonwealth Games Bid

To help me on my journey to qualify for the 2014 Commonwealth Games by helping me to fund an elite training camp in America.

We did it!

On 20th May 2014 we successfully raised £1,490 of £700 target with 44 supporters in 56 days

Thank you all so much for your support, I am unbelievably overwhelmed that I have managed to achieve my target in such a short space of time! Thanks so much for all your kind generosity. The quest for peak performance does not come without its cost, and therefore any money that I do raise over my target will be used to fund the costs to enter competitions in Florida and other competitions in Europe later on in the season, as well as physio and massage which is vital when training full time. I cannot describe how much I appreciate all of your support, knowing that there are so many people that are behind me has made me even more determined to compete for Jersey and do our island proud. My athletics journey hasn't been an easy ride, and without having the support of those around me coupled with my love and passion for the sport, at times I could have given up. However i'm now in a position to thrive to achieve my potential and regain my title as Jersey's 'Golden girl'.

Hi, my name’s Gemma, and I am Jersey's 200m and 400m record holder and a proud islander, born and bred! As one of Jersey's elite athletes, my dream is to represent our beautiful island at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. In order to make this dream a reality I am seeking support to fund an essential training camp in the USA with some of Britain’s greatest athletes, as part of my preparation for what is sure to be an amazing summer of sport.

The Commonwealth Games are a rare opportunity for those of us from Jersey to represent our country on the international stage, and i’m doing everything I can to be on the Glasgow 2014 start line, wearing the Jersey colours!

After finishing University, I moved to London to pursue my lifelong dream of becoming a professional athlete, and I am fortunate enough to now be coached by one of the world’s top coaches and train with a group of professional athletes who have competed at European, Commonwealth, World and Olympic level. Training with caliber athletes, and learning from such a respected and experienced coach has propelled my training to a new level, as demonstrated by my recent performances in the 800m, which is a new event for me, during the recent indoor season, where I opened up the season with a new personal best. This performance tells me that given the right training environment I am capable of qualifying for this years Commonwealth Games.

I was recently privileged to have been invited to attend an elite camp in Orlando, USA from the end of March until the end of April, to live and train with other professional athletes from around the word. This is the opportunity of a life time for me, bringing my dream of competing at Glasgow 2014 ever closer.

Having been given the opportunity to travel to the States with the GB team, the chances of me qualifying for the Commonwealth Games are greatly increased. Not only will taking part in this camp allow me to focus 100% on my training, without distraction from work or study commitments, but I will also be competing in many high-level competitions as part of the American Track & Field season, running against top competition on fast tracks, all of which will be eligible qualification competitions for Glasgow 2014.

Being brought up on a small island has never meant that I have settled for smaller ambitions, in fact, it has spurred me on to do quite the opposite. In Jersey it is often assumed that 'everybody knows everyone’, and this has given me the ambition to stand in front of millions of people around the world in order to represent each and everyone of us from the island, and to make my beautiful island proud.

I am seeking to raise funds purely to cover my expenses for this important training trip, and to give myself the very best chance possible to be part of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. I hope you can help me make this dream a reality!
