North East Dementia Gardens and Allotment

North East Dementia Gardens and Allotment

To develop a North East Dementia Gardens and Allotment for the benefit of those living with Dementia and their Carers

We did it!

On 23rd Jul 2014 we successfully raised £2,065 of £2,000 target with 25 supporters in 28 days

Help us to create the North East Dementia Gardens and Allotment.

There is so much more to Dementia than memory loss.  Many of those living with diagnosis have had to give up jobs or hobbies, and 71% have lost friends and report feeling lonely and socially isolated (Alzheimer's Society 2013).  We want to do something about that and to give people back a sense of purpose.

We are seeking funding to convert an area of disused land into a user friendly space for people living with a diagnosis of Dementia to come and enjoy working the land in the fresh air.  The benefits to the users are manifold.  The fresh air and exercise improves physical health with better sleep and improved appetites.  Group activity, being social by nature, reduces loneliness and isolation.  Both of these lead to an improvement in mental health, with lower rates of depression and anxiety, and improved self-esteem as a result of the company and sense of achievement.

Produce from the allotment will be shared with the group members so there is the added benefit of good quality organic fruit and veg for them to enjoy.

Many people enjoy allotments and continue to so until health and physical limitations force them to give this up.  For people living with Dementia, working an allotment is also a form of Reminiscence Therapy as the work bring backs happy memories and all the associated feelings.  Reminiscence Therapy has been shown to improve memory and other cognitive function, as well as the mental health benefits listed above.

Please help us to make this happen.   The fund will be used as follows:

  • Preparation of the allotment to make it accessible.
  • Building of raised beds for planting.  This is essential due to the physical limitation of group members.
  • Purchase of a shed for storage and potting
  • Purchase of a greenhouse
  • Purchase of seating
  • Purchase of tools - spades, forks, etc.
  • Purchase of seeds

Silverline Memories is a Volunteer led Social Enterprise in the NE of England.  We provide Reminiscence Activities and Workshops to older people and those living with Dementia, and a fortnightly Dementia Café.
