Hi - thanks for looking at our project - this is our first try at crowd funding. We're Youth Onstage - a youth theatre - and we're looking to raise funds towards the cost of hiring stage microphones for our upcoming production of Footloose the Musical this December. After all the hard work the youngsters put in we need to make sure that their fantastic vocals can be heard by everyone in the audience.
Here's a bit of background on who we are...
We are Youth Onstage, a musical theatre company which has been in existence since 2002. Our main objective is to perform musical shows in a professional theatre with amateur performers whose ages range from 9-25.
We aim to promote musical theatre and the performing arts to a varied age range of children/young adults from across the Midlands. By creating an environment whereby youngsters can channel their energies into the arts we offer them the chance to develop their awareness, understanding and skills in acting, singing, dancing and performing in front of a live audience. Performing enables them to gain confidence, develop their communication skills and sense of teamwork and to use their talents which may otherwise go unnoticed or unrecognised. We are offering them a safe environment in which they can learn, entertain and be part of a company which gives pleasure to the wider community. We also encourage our members to work behind the scenes if that is their preference; gaining skills in lighting, sound and stage management.
Our first production 'Crazy for you' was performed at the Old Rep Theatre in Birmingham in 2003 following a series of concerts in 2002. Since then we have performed two shows every year, a musical in the month of May at the Old Rep Theatre, Station Street, Birmingham and a pantomime or other musical in the month of December at the Dovehouse Theatre, Langley School, Olton, near Solihull. We have received excellent reviews and very positive feedback from the public - our May 14 show 'Les Miserables schools edition' received a 5 star review in the Birmingham Evening Mail.
Our productions are financed through a basic subscription fee, ticket sales and fund raising activities. We have to pay for our rehearsal rooms, storage of our costumes, props and self built scenery, advertising, any scenery hire, theatre hire, band charges, stage microphone hire, printing charges etc. to run the business aspect of the productions, (balance sheet, income and expenditure statements and reviews are kept for every performance). A standard budget will normally be in the range of £10,000 - £15,000.
Whilst some of this money is recoverable through ticket sales we cannot rely on this alone. We run fundraising events throughout the year, look for donations from local businesses and rely heavily on volunteers for our committee roles, backstage roles and front of house roles. Our volunteers are not paid and come from friends and family of current and ex members along with many ex-members themselves!
