Our History

YMCA is the largest and the oldest charity working with young people in the world.  Across England there are 114 YMCAS, each one independent and working with their local communities, helping to transform lives.  YMCA Mendip is celebrating 125 years in 2017 having been founded in Wells in 1892.

We focus on young people and help them play an active and fullfilling role with their communities.  Our vision is to help young people to belong, contribute and thrive.

Our Values

We operate a youth minded community approach characterised by five strong and distinctive values:-

We seek out, We speak out, We welcome, We serve others, We inspire.

Belief Statement

We believe every young person should:-

  • have someone they can trust
  • have a safe place to stay
  • have the support they need to develop and lead fulfilling lives
  • be able to enjoy the benefits of physical exercise from improved health to better education and life chances
  • be able to fulfill their full potential

Our Project

YMCA Mendip has recently saved Frome Youth & Community Centre from being lost to the local community by taking on a 99 year lease of the building.  We are currently in Phase 1 of a three- phase project to renovate the centre and to transform it into an accessible, vibrant community hub for people of all ages in Frome.

Damage to the existing roof has meant groups can no longer use the sports hall facility. Phase 1 involves repairs to existing roof and installation of solar panels. Phases 2 & 3  will be subject to funding secured, but we hope to make the building more fit for purpose and provide an affordable space for use by a variety of local groups.  Long term plans include the installation of a silver gym and community cafe.

Studies have shown that regular physical activity can help to reduce stress, increase self esteem and encourage positive mental health.  We aim to bring the people of Frome together across socio-economic and generational divides, by providing a warm, welcoming space where people can take part in affordable social, sporting and creative activities.
