This website provides info for individuals who have disabilities (especially wheelchair users) about access and facilities at social venues

Provide information about social venues for people with disabilities (especially wheelchair users), currently in Leeds and Sheffield.

www.disabledaccessguide.net is a non-profit making company which is trying to make it less stressful for people with disabilities and their family, friends or carers to go out to social venues such as shops, bars, restaurants, sporting/music venues and other places where one needs to know about access and facilities. Unlike other websites we use a standardised format to provide website users with information about each venue. The researchers are all trained in the same way so that the service users gets accurate information about each venue. Many companies do not consider how difficult it is for individuals with disabilities to get out and socialise or just go shopping.

The website also provides users with the option of looking on a map and searching for venues which are either near to them or have a name / postcode. This means that if you are going to somewhere new then there is no need to make that embarrassing phone call to ask if the venue is wheelchair accessible or has a accessible toilet; you just need to search for it and hopefully there will be a review.

People can also write blogs or place classified adverts for anything from selling an adapted car, to search for a new personal assistant or carer. The classified ads can be either nationwide or located in one city, which is very beneficial if you are searching for a new carer or if you are a carer and you are looking for a job in a certain area of the country.

We cannot continue doing this work without paying researcher to go and conduct surveys. We also need money to pay for the web team to keep the site up to date. Hopefully when we get more surveys completed and the website becomes more popular we will be able to attract advertising which will fund the research. However until then we are relying on charitable donation and private funding.
