Westoe Crown Community Hub is built on the site of the former Westoe Colliery in South Shields. It was officially opened last year by Westoe miner, Jimmy Rylance. The Hub is a social enterprise run by Asset Base South Tyneside CIC which offers sport, health and community activities to meet the needs of local residents. All profits made in the Hub are reinvested in the building and its programme of activities that improve the health, wellbeing and employability of local people.
We are raising funds to commission a local artist, Kevin Richards, to create a series of powerful paintings that will hang in the Hub's Lamplight Café commemorating the history of the site on which the Hub is built. Kevin, a former army engineer, paints to help him cope with post traumatic stress as a result of his service in Northern Ireland, Kosovo and Afghanistan. We are trying to help him start his own business as an artist.
