West End Impact is Helping people, bringing hope and changing lives, by giving food, advice guidance and a place to be part of the community
About the project
West End is situation in one of the 10% most deprived wards in the UK and has a high percentage of low educational achievement, a high rate of domestic violence and high percentage of people with mental health problems. There is a low life expectancy than the national average as a result of some of these major issues. West End Impact was founding in 2002 to address some of the issues.
West End Impact places a strong emphasis on providing a friendly, accepting, safe environment where all are welcome. We have a bright, modern multi-purpose building where people can come no matter what their need. They can get involved in volunteering and give back into the community in our volunteer programme. WEI's approach is holisitc, focussing on the person whether affected by poverty, homelessness, mental health issues, alcohol and substance misues or just isolation.
A first point of contact is a food parcel or a free meal, but we then address the issues why a person finds themsleves in crisis. ie housing, benefits advice, budgeting, emotional support or advocacy. We also refer to other agencies. We run a course called Living Life to the Full which is a CBT based NHS accredited course to help people deal with or overcome depressions, anxiety and low mood. We run INNOVATE creative group where people can experiment in art, crafts and furniture restoration. This helps people build confidence, self-esteem and learn new skills.
We also encourage clients to get involved in volunteering where they get full in house training and mentoring. We have helped 5 people back into work in 2014 through our volunteer program and training. This helps long term unemployed people get back into a structured and encouraging but not intense working environment. They build confidence and learn skills and have a better chance of getting a job. We have 4 paid staff and 40+ voluteers!
West End Impact can point to many people whose lives have changed and now contribute to their local community. We have help 380 indivduals in 2,200 different ways in 2014. We want to continue with our projects and do more to move people forward into a better future ie employment or feeling part of the community. So please help us to raise much needed funds!! In the current financial climate with a complicated welfare system, poverty is on the increase!! We know we are saving peoples lives by what we do as we have also seen people die as a result of being in extreme circumstances and poverty. I can so easily happen to anyone!!
