Project aim

The Weekend of Film is dedicated to bringing alternative, independent and world cinema to Carlisle, with screenings and cast and crew Q&As.

By creating a weekend of events related to screening great films not normally included in mainstream cinema listings we hope to generate a new audience for independent and foreign language film and put Carlisle on the map for promoters looking to bring new and exciting titles to our audiences.

The Weekend of Film 2015 follows on from last year's pilot event, which welcomed almost 500 visitors to watch films, take part in discussion groups and create their own stop motion animations. This year we hope to reach even more people, for a bigger and better event.

About the project

Since the closure of the Lonsdale Cinema on Warwick Road, the Monday Alternative at Tullie House has provided a place for Carlisle audiences to experience some of the greatest in independent, alternative and world cinema titles on the big screen. The Weekend of Film began in 2014 to continue the work of the Monday Alternative and celebrate great cinema here in Carlisle.

Last year the event hosted 14 screenings including headline screenings of LEAVE TO REMAIN, with producer Kate Cook and cast member Ebrahim Ismail Qorbat, DOWNHILL with director James Rouse, actor Jeremy Swift and writer Torben Betts and NORTHERN SOUL with actor Elliot Langridge.

This year the Weekend of Film 2015 will bring more cast and crew members to Carlisle for special screenings of titles not normally available in the city. Alongside a busy programme of screenings there will also be an opportunity to make a short animated film as Robin Webb returns to run Stop Motion Animation drop-ins for all ages on both Saturday and Sunday. The Film Lounge returns as a place to relax and meet between screenings and will host A Quiz Called Wanda, our challenging film quiz on Sunday evening.

New for 2015, we will also open the doors to budding film makers with the Mobile Movie Challenge, in association with The University of Cumbria. Student filmmakers will mentor groups of three or more to create a short film from scratch, using no more than a smart phone and laptop.

As a charity Tullie House cannot support this brilliant event alone. If you strongly believe in sharing great cinema across the country and bringing more cultural and entertainment events to the city of Carlisle then you can support The Weekend of Film by pledging whatever you can.

Pledges start at just £3 and all pledgers will receive recognition through our social media platforms, reaching an audience of more than 7,500 people, across Facebook, Twitter and Google+.

Those pledging £30 will receive discounted tickets to six screenings of their choice, including headline screening across the weekend.

Pledgers of £50 will recieve the Crowdfunder exclusive ‘Golden Ticket’ which will give the holder access to any screening during the weekend in reserved seating. This pledge is limited so act early so you don't miss out!

Screenings will be announced on Wednesday 16 September

We are also appealing to local businesses looking for new and innovative ways to support cultural events in their city and promote their services to new audiences. Businesses can pledge their support by sponsoring a screening during the weekend. In return their business logo will be used in publicity material and they will receive tickets to their screening and the opening night.
