I lost £800 in April this year after I entered an agreement to rent a room in a nice flat overlooking the marina in Apsley, Hemel Hempstead, Herts, close to Apsley train station. I paid £400 for one month's rent in advance and a £400 deposit.
The reason I needed to move is that I was suffering from severe harassment and persecution from my neighbours.
I was given a contract but no keys to the property.
It later turned out that the man who had agreed to rent me the room was not the landlord and was a housing association tenant.
He had no intention of renting me the room and according to the police he had withdrawn the money straight away after I had paid him and had spent it on drugs.
He is under criminal investigation and he is due back in court in January.
So far the judge has not ordered him to pay any damages to the victims.
He received a 12 month suspended sentence and a 60 day drug rehabilitation order for the offences against myself and various other victims and he is due back in court for a string of other offences in January.
He has defrauded around 30 victims and the worst thing is that the police allowed him to carry on offending even while on bail and under ongoing criminal investigation.
He had defrauded 10 people before committing the offences against me and the police still allowed him to carry on despite being on bail.
I am 26 and could ill afford to lose this kind of money as I am a Student and have now been forced to continue living in my parents house.
