New stretch target
We've put together an incredibly tight budget. An extra £360 will go directly into sound and tech, paying for mics, draping and equipment to bring the full musical potential of the show to life.
Fledgling company Burn Bright Theatre have teamed up with award-nominated Space Productions to stage Tanya Ronder's exciting adaptation.
About the project
We're raising money for Burn Bright Theatre's first ever production - Vernon God Little, running at the Space theatre in East London from 24th March - 11th April 2015.
Burn Bright have been extremely lucky to have recieved invaluable support as we take our first steps as a new company. We're being supported by Space Productions, the Space's in-house theatre company, to present our first show as a co-production. We've been given access to rehearsal space, marketing and production support and have a brilliant project mentor in the form of Adam Hemming, the Space's Artistic Director.
We've also just recieved Arts Council England funding, which means we are able to pay our ensemble of ten talented actors and our eight-strong production team for their hard work on the project. All of these elements together mean we're in a great position to tackle such an ambitious show.
HOWEVER, our funding comes with a big condition. We've pledged to the Arts Council that we'll raise some money to help support their grant, and now need to meet that target. Our ACE donation also only covers production fees, so the money for all other elements of the production - set, costume, props, programmes - has to be raised by us.
We've come so far already with this amazing play, and are in really good stead to put on a unique, unforgettable show. Please help us with this final push - and treat yourself to some rewards while you're at it!
About the show
Fifteen-year-old Vernon Gregory Little is in trouble. The tiny, flea-bitten town of Martirio – barbecue sauce capital of Texas – is in shock after Vernon’s best friend Jesus Navarro massacres sixteen of their classmates before turning his gun on himself.
With Jesus dead and nobody left to blame, the Martirio townsfolk are looking for a scapegoat. And with the appearance of charming but sadistic television reporter Eulalio “Lally” Ledesma, Vernon soon finds himself in hot water. There’s only one answer: take inspiration from the film Against All Odds and run away to Mexico. But the law is in hot pursuit, the TV cameras are rolling, and before too long, the eyes of the entire world are on Vernon.
First nominated for an Olivier for Best New Play during its Young Vic premiere in 2007, Vernon God Little is a darkly comic look at the commercialisation of horror – and the importance of looking out for other people. Complete with a rhinestone-studded country and western soundtrack and a dollop of barbecue sauce, this exciting play proves that desperate times can throw up the most unlikely of heroes.
Fledgling company Burn Bright Theatre team up with six-times Off West End Award-nominated Space Productions for a 2015 revival of Tanya Ronder’s critically acclaimed adaptation. DBC Pierre’s Man Booker Prize-winning novel explodes onto the stage in a free-wheeling, fast-talking, foot-stomping night at the theatre like no other.
About the team
Fledgling company Burn Bright Theatre was formed by producer and playwright Isabel Dixon and director and workshop facilitator Katherine Timms. We met at the University of York way back in 2008, and have previously worked as an assistant director and assistant producer for Space Productions. We have also collaborated as a freelance director/producer duo for other emerging companies, including award-winning Jackinabox Productions.
Burn Bright Theatre is our first step into running our own company. We places an emphasis on ensemble-led theatre and live storytelling and has a strong ethos of collaboration with other theatre artists, including composers, movement directors and playwrights.
We're working with a brilliant team for Vernon God Little, including composer Odinn Orn Hilmarrson and sound designer Keri Danielle Chesser (a brilliant duo both nominated for an Off-West End Award for Best Sound Design at the Space in 2013), movement director Hayley Adams and lighting guru Andy Farrington.
Our production partner Space Productions is the in-house theatre company at the Space, formed in 2007 by Adam Hemming, the venue’s Artistic Director, and creative producer Mari Rettedal-Westlake. Dedicated to staging accessible, ambitious and inventive theatre, the company has staged 19 productions to date and has providing opportunities for numerous performers and theatre artists. Space Productions has recieved six Off-West End Award nominations, including Best Director, Best Actor and Best Set Design. Their acclaimed production of Festen in July 2013 was praised by the playwright, David Eldridge, who tweeted “The @SpaceArtsCentre #Festen in its intimate traverse production on a tiny budget gives the @AlmeidaTheatre original a run for its money.”
Thank you for all your help and support!
