We are Rona and Nevil with our 5 children that are aged from 9 to 15. We are first generation farmers, that means we were not born on a farm, but after meeting at agricultural college we have worked hard to be become farm tenants. Starting off on a small rundown hill farm we have now been lucky enough to be picked as National Trust tenants on the spectacularly beautiful Tregullas Farm. Tregullas Farm has great soil and has in the past produced cauliflowers and early potatoes as well as supporting a dairy herd that supplied milk to local teashops.
Over the last few years the farm has been neglected, hedges are in disrepair and soil organic matter is low. Our vision is to bring Tregullas Farm back to life as a farm that provides produce to local people and businesses at the same time improving the local environment. Already we are supplying our tasty duck and chicken eggs locally and we have a flock of quail arriving soon.
Funding fencing for livestock, more animals for the extra fields and numerous other equipment needed on a new farm means that our capital has been spread very thin. So this project is to raise some funds to develope a veg enterprise on just 1acre in the first year, but expanding to 5 by 2016. Here we are looking to grow garlic, brassicas, salad leaves and some flowers for cutting. These will be sold to the local community and to the local businesses so they can offer the best Cornish produce to their customers.
To make this project a success we need to purchase seeds, hand tools and a set of discs to enable us to cultivate small areas of land as we need to plant them. This will mean that we can improve the soil structure and reduce the reliance on contractors. Long term success of the project will mean that we will be able to offer some rewarding local employment and fresh low cost produce with zero food miles
Thank you for taking time to read this and we hope you are able to support us to achieve our dream of making Tregullas Farm come alive again.
