Project aim

Bristol's most affordable Youth Theatre. We create a safe and welcoming space for young people to grow their skills, perform & make friends.

About the project

Travelling Light runs Bristol's friendliest Youth Theatre, at which we create a safe and welcoming space where young people feel a sense of belonging and have a platform to hear and be heard. It comprises regular term-time after-school drama workshops for 4-19 year olds and a specialist group for children with additional needs. At Travelling Light young people can learn creative and interpersonal skills, make new friends and work with inspiring professional theatremakers. Currently we reach over 70 young people a week, and each term we give the Youth Theatre a specific theme to explore, and a specific arts approach within which to develop skills. Each term ends with an informal sharing of achievements.

We are located in Lawrence Hill, the most deprived ward in Bristol and among the 10% most deprived in England. 79.1% of children in the local area live in income deprived households. Income deprived households are less likely to be able to participate in mainstream social, cultural and economic activities and often feel socially excluded. The majority of our participants live in the local area.

We aim to help young people realise their potential to succeed and achieve. We aspire to serve our community as a unique centre of learning for young people from diverse cultural and social backgrounds. We want to enable young people to make a positive difference to the world and be recognised for their achievements.

We need to raise just £2000 to keep the Youth Theatre running over 2015/16 and want to raise £700 of that through crowd funding.  Every little helps.
