Torbay Young Carers - supporting mental health

The project is aimed at providing resources and services to impact positively on the mental health and wellbeing of young carers in Torbay.

The project is aimed at providing resources and services that will impact positively on the mental health and wellbeing of young carers in Torbay.

Research shows that rates of anxiety and depression in young people have increased by 70% over the past 25 years.  Young carers are a particularly vulnerable group of young people, having the physical and emotional demands of their caring responsibilities for parents or other family members on top of the usual stresses that many young people face.

Torbay Young Carers Service supports over 500 young carers in the local area between the ages of 5 and 18. We provide support in schools, group sessions and individual support as well as assessing the needs of young carers. We are lucky to be able to provide respite activities thanks to funding and support from local community groups such as BMAD (Bikers Make A Difference) and Rotary Clubs, but are now looking to raise funds to provide additional support around young people's mental wellbeing.

To support the fund, Teresa Mikalauskas, Senior Project Leader at Torbay Young Carers Service will be taking part in a charity challenge trekking through the Grand Canyon region.
