We're raising match funding to run TOPOS, a year long artists' residency, studio and event space for socially engaged arts practice.

New stretch target

Hurray! We've reached our target. Thanks to everyone for getting involved. We are still fundraising and any further money we raise will add to our budget to support expenses for our public events - bring in more guest presenters and strengthen our work with volunteers in particular.

You can pledge to receive any of the TOPOS rewards up until December 30th. Last posting date for rewards before Christmas - 12th December.

Now, we're really looking forward to meeting you at a TOPOS event.

I am hoping to reach the target by December 10th so that our entry level rewards can be sent out for Christmas

Who am I?

I'm Volkhardt Müller a German artist and Exeter resident since 2002. Over the past 5 years I've been making new art work about the city and the people who live here. I work with friends, neighbours, residents, strangers on the street to depict major themes shaping contemporary British society, through the prism of this one particular city I live in.

What is TOPOS?

Over the next year I have the opportunity to be artist 'in residence' in a sizeable second floor unit  on the edge of Exeter's central retail area. I want to use this time and space to make and showcase a series of brand new works in response to the city, and to involve local people in that process in extraordinary ways.

This residency is about concentrated time to tackle ambitious ideas: I want to make a series of large-scale contemporary landscapes and portraits of Exeter, and the people that populate it in print, paint and on video. But TOPOS will be more than just an artist's studio. I want to collaborate with other artists and create a buzz about contemporary art making in the centre of the city. I want to create an exhibition and events space, where members of the public can share in and contribute to the experience.

Rewards-TOPOS tote bagA project-led art space in this kind of location, for this length of time, is something we know from more urban centres, but Exeter is full of creative energy and I have a genuine faith that making TOPOS a success will contribute to preparing the ground for more such initiatives to happen in the future.

Project Costs and Your Support

I have been given this space for free for a year, and have support for the project from key arts and cultural organisations across the region. Arts Council England have offered to meet most of the project costs. This crowd funder plays a crucial role not just in providing cash match funding, but a vote of confidence in the idea and its place in Exeter. It will also help to spread the word about TOPOS and raise expectations of the things to come.

Your support for TOPOS will contribute directly to the making and sharing of contemporary art in Exeter by:

- Turning an empty retail unit into a basic working and exhibition space – we need lighting, work benches, seating for events, projection facilities, shelving, storage and security

- Supporting travel, accommodation and materials for 3 nationally recognized resident artists to work in the space and on the streets with the public.

- Paying for the work to be documented in image and writing for publication online and in print, so that you and everyone else can find out more about what’s happening in Exeter.

 Rewards

You can support TOPOS and spread the word by choosing from a range of rewards I've made - or will be making - as part of the project. There are art-work offers including lino and woodcuts of different sizes, drawings, paintings and video. There are also events that groups and organisations can take part in together. Such as a woodcut workshop, or a coffee and cake studio tour of work-in-progress.

If you are group of more than five people, you can take part in a 30 minute video work that will reproduce a well known art work somewhere in Devon. A great day out for a group of friends or colleagues - and you get a digital copy of the work and production stills.

If the target is reached within 4 weeks, all badges, bags and TOPOS prints will be with you in time for Christmas 2014!

Your support is very much appreciated. I look forward to meeting you in the TOPOS space.
