Skyliner is about sharing stories of the unusual art, architecture and history with a view to enthusing residents of the city to love where they live, and an ultimate aim to acquire and share knowledge freely. In a nutshell I want help towards the costs of setting up and running alternative tours. The tours will generate revenue which could allow me to focus on my research and writing, that I do in the guise of Skyliner, as a career one day. Everyone should love their job so I'm going to give my all to making what I love doing my career - if I don't try I'd forever regret it. Wouldn't you? Every city is amass with surprising and significant, local and cultural sights and stories, that are in danger of being forgotten. Every building has a tale that can transform how you view and interact with your city. It's really staggering to think there's public art which has been made within our lifetime that goes uncredited and will forever do so if we don't ask questions and do research; there are archives that are being destroyed; there are stories we can save. So why should you help? I want this funding to fully establish my tour guiding, as this is the best means of Skyliner growing in scope and quality. These tours are to edify and to encourage the public to talk positively about their hometown to people they meet. It effectively takes them on a journey from resident to tourist to budding tour guide. Here's why I think that's important: Awareness of our art and (even very recent) history can help drive passion for important sites; it can help save buildings in danger; it can expand minds; it can inspire people, like it has me, to make the change from their humdrum lives and embrace a passion they never knew they had. There are other tour guides in Manchester, but few of them highlight the alternative side of the city, even less publish their knowledge somewhere that is accessible to all audiences...for free, and constantly updated. Skyliner is about sharing, inspiring and being transparent - it is about the perception and presentation of academia. Eventually I'd like Skyliner to be a nationwide database of locations and stories that have been saved from being forgotten because, afterall, a memory lives only as long as the last person who remembers it...
