Project aim

To raise funds to support an exhibition of Japanese Zen master Shinzan Roshi's calligraphy and drawings in Camberwell, London on 2-5th July.

About the project

Shinzan Miyamae Roshi is the abbot of Gyokuryuji Temple in Japan, and teacher of London-based Zen master Daizan Roshi.

Shinzan Roshi has been practising the art of Shodo calligraphy since he was a young boy. Though all Japanese school children learn the basic calligraphy skills, it wasn’t until 1966, when Roshi began his training as a Zen monk, that the influence of Zen entered into his work and became its dominant theme. During his Zen training, he apprenticed under three prolific Zen masters preparing their sumi ink, brushes and paper, and assisting them at every step. Now, after half a century of Zen practice, he is recognised as a master of Zen calligraphy in his own right, with his work appearing at numerous galleries, in books and in calendars.

On 2-5th July 2015, we are organising the first UK exhibition of his works at our dojo in Camberwell, south London. We will be showing around 25 pieces especially created for this exhibition.

This exhibition is timed to coincide with his 80th birthday, and Shinzan Roshi will be present in London and leading workshops in Zen calligraphy as part of his international teaching schedule. For more information, see the exhibition website www.thezencharacter.uk

Daizan runs the Zenways sangha from his base in London, where we meet twice a week for meditation (www.zenways.org).
