About our Company

Footlights is Exeter University’s largest Musical Theatre society, now in its 31st year. Each year, we strive to create show-stopping student productions to a professional standard. Following three consecutive sell-out shows at Exeter’s Northcott Theatre (West Side Story; Evita; The Phantom of the Opera), we are now looking forward to our 2017 Northcott production of Mel Brooks’ musical Meisterwerk, The Producers.

Adapted from Brooks’ 1968 comedy classic, and winner of a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards, The Producers is an absurd, gleefully irreverent, and fast-paced satiric comedy with a boisterous swing score parodying Golden Age Broadway musicals. When two theatrical schmucks discover that they can make more money with a flop than with a hit, they set out to produce the loser of all losers – a ridiculous musical about Hitler that’s guaranteed to close in one night!

About our Show

The Producers is our most ambitious project yet! Featuring our largest-ever cast of 36 performers, a full 21-piece band, and 31-member production team, The Producers is set to be an experience not to be missed.

In terms of vision, our Artistic Director aims to capture an 'anything goes' absurdity, conjuring an electric energy that complements Brooks' biting satire and instils the show with a personality unique to this creative team. We aim to create nostalgia for a bygone era of musical comedy, as well as revitalizing the period by incorporating contemporary idiosyncracies in our design.

To make the most of the Northcott's vast space, our set has been tailor-made for this production with specific elements able to be repurposed in our future shows. Jason Denvir,  our phenomenal designer, has devised a set that is surprising, flexible, and economical. Featuring trucked elements, a flying kabuki screen, confetti cannon, and different types of lighting, the set pays homage to classic Golden Age Broadway, but has a 21st Century kick. It is abstract, expressionistic, and madcap, perfectly capturing the show's eccentric personality.  Our costume team will take its cues from Jason's bold aesthetic to style a host of quirky characters, from Little Old Ladies and a pantomime horse to tap dancing Nazi Stormtroopers and sleazy Producers.

Here's a little teaser of what we have in store:

Why Crowdfunder?

In order to help us achieve our aims for the show, we warmly invite you to support us by donating to this Crowdfunder.

As you can imagine, producing a musical, let alone one of this size and ambition in a 460-seat professional venue, does not come cheap. However, we wholeheartedly believe this is a project worth investing in. Whatever donation you are willing to offer, big or small, will be hugely appreciated, and we have a number of great rewards available should you chose to donate!

All donations will go towards ensuring every element of the production (set, sound, lighting, costume, and props) meets our ambitions for a creative and polished student production. Below we have included for you the initial costs for a production of this scale. Please note that figures for income are based on the previous 3 years of Northcott productions.

In addition to this Crowdfunder, we dedicate the months of September through to January as fundraising for The Producers, holding events such as bake sales, pub quizzes, 48-hour musicals (an entire musical written and performed in 48 hours!), and our legendary launch event, ‘The Hop’. We also apply for a number of grants to support the production; these include grants directly from our University, such as the Guild Grant, ExTunes and the Annual Fund.

We hope you will choose to join us on our journey to make The Producers a reality. From all of us in the company, we offer you our sincerest thanks, and look forward to seeing you at the Northcott in January!
