The Magic Island: A New Family Musical

The Magic Island: A New Family Musical

This new musical will be performed this summer - 28th/29th August - on the Isle of Skye

Join Island Opera in our musical adventure as we journey to 'The Magic Island' where the story of Queen Rhiannon unfolds before our eyes. This family friendly musical, inspired by Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’, is full of heartache and mystery, and takes us to a magical island where anything is possible…

Performed by recent graduates and students from The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, including Skye soprano Rhona Coogan, this original production is not one to be missed!

Island Opera are bringing a new family musical to Skye this summer. This original musical, written by Hannah Noone, will be performed by a young cast of dynamic professional singers. Our aim is to bring a new 'family' work to a community with limited access to live contemporary musical theatre. In the process we endeavour to engage young people and their families through the delivery of a series of innovative workshops, which provide a unique insight into the show and our creative process. The project is equally an important opportunity for ourselves as emerging artists to gain invaluable experience touring to and performing in, such a culturally rich and unique environment.

The production will be performed at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig on Friday 28th August (7.30pm) and Saturday 29th August (2pm and 7.30pm).

Island Opera 2015

We are a small ensemble-based opera group that aims to provide a platform for emerging young singers who have a passion for performing and workshopping within community settings across the UK.

Director Hannah Noone and producer Rhona Coogan met whilst collaborating on Cardiff-based company Opera'r Ddraig's production of Carmen. They formed a successful working relationship, going on to produce 'Hansel & Gretel' with the same company, a production which was awarded Arts Council of Wales funding to support a tour to primary and secondary schools in North Wales. There the cast were joined by over 50 school pupils onstage as the climax to a series of innovative workshops and rehearsals with over 100 young people, which were run by the creative team throughout the summer prior to the show.

'Fresh, young talent...'
'Hannah Noone directs with style, giving all these singer actors plenty of scope to show off individualy personality while keeping a firm grip on the ensemble work in this racing and racy tale' (Mike Smith, Arts Scene in Wales)
Hansel and Gretel, Nov '14, The Gate, Cardiff
'The work is packed with jolly tunes, races along and is easy to follow in the hands of director Hannah Noone.' (Western Mail)
Carmen, Feb '14, The Gate, Cardiff

Following this they decided to explore their shared passion for bringing new and innovative musical projects to rural communities, starting with the creation of an original work for the Isle of Skye.

This is an ambitious project for a small, unfunded company and whilst we have bags of passion, talent and love for what we do, our project budget is non-existant. In order for this project to take place we need to raise a total of £1,060, which would fund the travel of our 10 cast and crew members to get from Cardiff to Skye!

The funding that we are looking to obtain is for:

10 x flights at £60 return = £600

Hire cars x 2 £230 p/week £460

Anything you can donate to our project, be it 50p or £50, will be truly and gratefully received. Let's make this happen!!
