New stretch target
Our stretch target is £4,000. This will enable us to be able to run an effective campaign for the Stroud District Council elections at the same time at the General Election Campaign, in which we will be fighting to retain 5 of our 6 seats on the Council plus aiming to win 2 or 3 more seats. Now we've got this far, we're co nfident we can keep up the momentum and reach this new target to enable us to fight a really successful local campaign
We need your help to raise £2600 to enable us to put up candidates in the Stroud and Cotswolds Constituencies in the General Election.
The Green Party doesn't have the same level of financial backing that other parties have, so we lack the money required to stand MPs all over the UK. We experienced a massive surge in support in 2014, with our membership more than doubling; however we don't have big corporate or union funding!
Despite this, Brighton and Hove managed to elect Caroline Lucas as MP (who was recently voted Parliamentarian of the Year); and we in the South West voted in Molly Scott-Cato as our first ever Green MEP for the South West last year. They are both fantastic and we need more people like them in politics. Now we've got 2 brilliant local candidates who want to stand for Parliament in the General Election, namely Chris Jockel (for Stroud) and Penny Burgess (Cotswold). All we need now is your help!
The fee to stand as MP is £500 per constituency. Apparently this is to deter those who are not serious, but the reality is that it ensures only a certain type of person can stand, preventing those from poorer backgrounds or without the backing of multimillionaires from getting anywhere. With your help we might just stand a chance to take part and get our voice heard.
Just look at the media blackout that occurred during the local and European elections. The BBC gave UKIP "fair coverage" (at the time they had no MPs) and cited reasons for doing so such as "public opinion". It could be argued that this is opinion which they, the BBC, create! Conversely, with the Green Party massively increasing its membership to very close to that of both the Lib Dems and UKIP, and making significant impact to national and local debates, we have still not been invited to Leadership Debates.
This is about fairness and quality which, at present, don't seem to exist within our democratic system. The Greens have now overtaken the Lib Dems in many opinon polls so we should now expect fair coverage. Standing as many candidates as possible will help to achieve this and we believe we can do it with YOUR HELP!
This is also about standing realistic, genuine candidates for office. If the local and European elections are anything to go by, WE REALLY CAN DO IT! In the Stroud District elections in May, we stood candidates in all 18 wards; and got 18.5% of all the votes cast, winning 2 seats and coming second in five others. With 6 district councillors, we are part of the Ruling Administration of the Council with the power to make a real difference. We also got Stroud's very own Molly Scott-Cato elected as the South West's first ever Green MEP and, as above, there's recently been an extraordinary surge in membership. So no-one can say anymore that voting Green is a wasted vote because they never win - it's just not true; these results show there are a lot of people out there who support us. And according to the neutral 'Vote for Policies' website, 33% of 800+ people surveyed in Stroud constituency would vote Green based on anonymised policies!
We need to raise £2,600 to stand candidates in the Stroud and Cotswold constituencies: £1,000 for the two deposits and £1,600 to make sure a leaflet is delivered to every houshold. This will make sure that the Green Party message gets onto the doormats and kitchen tables of all voters in the two constituencies.
Please show your support for the Greens and help us stand. If we could find 1000 people to donate just £3 each - a small amount of money by most people's standards, we would be there.
Thanks for taking the time to look at our project, and hopefully also for your support!
* Please ensure that you are on the electoral register - this is a requirement for donating to a political party.
