Who are we?
We are a group of parents, artist and teachers putting together an application to Government, via the Free Schools Initiative, to create a free school in the South Hams area of Devon. This school would offer Steiner education to children from 4 to 16 and would be state-funded, so free to all.
What do we want?
We are looking to raise money towards marketing materials and to pay for our subscription to the Steiner Schools Fellowship.
What’s it all about?
Steiner -Waldorf education is respected worldwide for it’s ability to create well-rounded, capable and confident students, who enjoy learning and are well placed to contribute productively to society. In most European countries it is already a part of State-funded education provision.
The curriculum is based on the work of Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner, who created an education system based on his observations of the developing child. In the early years there is an emphasis on play and imagination; in the middle years this grows into curiosity and investigation; and in the upper school into purposeful creativity and a deepening of knowledge. Throughout the school years the curriculum is broad and interdisciplinary, pupils are supported to develop practical skills - such as metal-work, gardening and craft - alongside core subjects such as English, modern languages and maths.
Steiner schools consistently produce exam results well above the national average with pupils progressing to University and other tertiary education programmes. Children are encouraged to develop into happy, healthy, confident individuals who are able to impart purpose and direction to their lives.
