St Bonaventure's is an all boys school situated in the deprived London Borough of Newham. The school’s concrete playground, cage and sports hall has been the proving ground for several notable sporting alumni such as Jermaine Defoe, Chris Hughton, Martin Ling, Chuba Akpom, Chuks Aneke, Alex Bailey, Peter Bakare, Francis Bongwalanga, John Chiedozie, Anthony Edgar, Ryan Edgar, Clayton Fortune, Julian Hilaire, Terry Lawless, Mickey May, Christian McNeish, Isobella McNeish, Bondz Ngala, Teddy Okereafor, John Okusi, Alex Stavrinou, Alton Thelwell, Andre Thomas and many more.
Unfortunately, due to the change in economic climate, schools are having their budgets cut which is having an enormous effect on their day to day running. However, St Bon’s has not only had it’s budget cut, we also missed out on the recent educational revamp of the majority of Newham schools as we are a school of ‘faith’ which means they do not provide us with the same amount of funding as the other local schools, which is why we are asking you to help us raise £150,000.
Whilst other schools have been redeveloped and have received capital funding to modernise their facilities, St Bon’s PE’s facilities have become dilapidated and unsightly. We are currently facing challenges such as a severely leaking roof, an uninspiring classroom covered in hazard tape and stained ceiling tiles, a decrepit changing room with no ventilation and a general need for a lick of paint among other things. £110,000 will go directly towards improving these facilities as well as adding a small gym in the classroom to enable students to learn practically. The leaky roof has recently be quoted as £55,000 to repair before we even consider the interior of the building.
£20K will be spent on updating equipment & playground facilities which will be used by hundreds of students daily. To add perspective we were recently quoted £2500 for the purchase and installation of a new basketball post.
£10K will be used to develop our own scholarship programme which will enable us to support our elite athletes by providing them with opportunities to compete at the highest level on an equal playing field. We aim to use the money to cover individuals competition entry fees and provide outstanding individuals with equipment which they may not have previously been able to afford.
Over recent years a large number of teams have been nationally successful which is why we aim to use 5k to part fund a trip to America to compete against our name sake St Bonaventures High School in New York. We will only part fund the trip as we want the teams to work together to raise the majority. The is no reward without hard work.
The final 5k will go towards the support of Louis Guinto’s dream of creating his first short film. Louis is the bons boy behind the camera who has been our director, editor and cameraman. The money will help him to purchase equipment, cover the cost of insurance and gain him access to the necessary studio time. We are all a team here at bons after all.
Should you wish to donate please do leave your name as all named donors will be placed on a plaque which will be displayed in our sports hall as a sign of gratitude. Furthermore should you donate over £5,000 my team and I will assist you in the organisation and delivery of a fun sports day or other such sporting competitions for your company or friendship group.
On behalf of the students and every Bons boy that has ever passed through the gates I sincerely thank you for your donations regardless how big or small as all the funds will go towards a potential life changing experience.
