What is Spear?

Spear is a year-long programme that equips 16-to-24-year-olds not in education, employment or training (NEET) from disadvantaged backgrounds  to find long-term employment.

Spear coaches young people to help overcome the attitudes and behaviours that are holding them back, as well as training in how to write a CV, mock interview practice etc. We continue to support each young person for a year afterwards to help them enter into employment and progress up the career ladder.

We have a strong track record of achieving significant results – Over three quarters of those who complete Spear return to education or go on to work, and are still there a year later.

Success Stories

Kaytlin*:

Kaytlin joined Spear in June 2016. She found it difficult to manage her emotions and quit her last job without telling anyone after a falling out with her manager.

During Spear Foundation we looked at techniques that would help Kaytlin to manage her emotions in a professional way, even when things were tough. One topic we discussed was the Power Mentality, where you recognise that in any situation you have a choice about how to respond. Kaytlin saw that by taking responsibility for her choices she would be better able to control the direction of her life.

As a result, Kaytlin was able to remain positive in spite of rejections and frustrations, and has now been working for Etc Venues in Central London for over a year with ongoing help from the Spear Coaches.

Freddie*:

Freddie joined Spear in June 2017. He had started Spear once before, but dropped out because his home life was so chaotic. After a short stay in prison, he came out and re-joined Spear the next day.

Freddie was passionate about football and wanted to apply to a football academy. We helped him to prepare his CV, write his applications, and prepare for interviews. We also helped him to work out how to talk about his criminal record with employers and colleges. Freddie was determined to move forward in his life.

Just a few months later, Freddie is now enrolled at college and studying Sports Science with Football. He is enjoying his course, and is in regular contact with the Spear coaches.

Your Donations

If we reach our target by the end of November, Harrow Council and the Young Harrow Foundation will match your donations, giving us a total of £4,000.  So every donation, however big or small, will have a huge impact on the lives of young people in Harrow at the start of their careers - thank you for getting involved!
