After wild otters are brought in after being orphaned, they need specialist care for up to a year. Once the initial rehabilitation is complete, thye need to be taken to the eventual relelase site in the wild. For the safty of the otter we use what is known as a soft release pen which is as the image shows, an electric fence with outer protective fence. The otters stay in these pens for around 10 days to get them aclimatised to their new surroundings but at the same time, keeping them safe. After 10 days, we then remove the electric fence and leave the artificial house there for them to shelter once in the wild.
Often, the otters will leave the area to investigate the river and never use the house again in which case we remove it for another project. Without this vital equioment we are unable to get otters vback into the wild where they belong.
