New stretch target
If we are fortunate enough to exceed our target we will donate 50% of the funding raised over £3k to local registered charities.
We are raising start up money to kick start our fundraising activities and therefore enable and improve our campaigns for 2016/17 and beyond. We also hope that if we are successful and surpass our initial target of £3000, then at the end of this initiiative, we will be able to donate a sum of money to charities in our local community.
Who we are
We are a long established branch of the Scottish National Party and a member of the Argyll and Bute Constituency. We have over 600 members and hold regular meetings and events throughout the year. Our two wards in Oban & Lorn cover 1044 square miles of beautiful terrain, with a population density of 21 people per square mile, separated by stretches of water and mountains. We stretch from the Isle of Tiree in the west to Bridge of Orchy in the east and from Arduaine in the south to Appin in the north.
To connect with and campaign in these areas our activists are presented with unique challenges and sometimes prohibitive expenses.
We have had very successful campaigns in the last year. In our area, we helped to win a majority for the Yes Campaign in the Referendum, we have also fought two council by-elections and we played our part in returning our SNP MP, Brendan O'Hara to Westminster with a resounding majority, in one of the most creative and colourful campaigns ever seen in Argyll & Bute.
Our volunteers are dynamic, creative and extremely hard working. They go the extra mile for us at every opportunity.
We aim to be a socially inclusive branch of the SNP where everyone is welcome and their contribution is valued.
We have a strong sense of community and a big part of the ethos of this fundraising initiative is to take the branch out to our more rural areas and to include everyone, rather than expecting people in our vast area to always come to Oban.
We value our exceptional activists and want to invest in their talents and goals.
We value our communities and want to engage with them in new and progressive ways.
The challenges that we face
It costs £17 to send leaflets to the Isle of Tiree for delivery and we had over half a dozen leaflet rounds in the General Election. These are expenses that the urban areas don't face. Car ferry journeys are just not possible. We have proven ourselves by campaigning hard but we want to do better. We want to visit and canvass all over Oban, Lorn and the Isles. We have been hugely successful in harnessing the energy and enthusiasm of our grass roots supporters, many of whom had never been part of a political campaign before, but all our activism has been done on a shoestring.
In 2016 we have the Holyrood elections, in 2017 the council elections and in 2018 the European elections with a possible in/out referendum of Europe in between. We need a well resourced election hub in Oban from where we can base our campaign. We require technology that will allow us to make contact with as many voters as possible and we need to fund the costs of travelling to the remote and rural areas in our wards so that we can speak directly to our communities.
There is a statistic that says that if you actually go to the trouble of talking to an undecided voter, you will get half of that vote, if you follow it up with good informative literature and keep in touch with them then you may get that vote. We have the drive and determination to make that happen in the Oban area.
Your contribution will count
With a financial contribution from you we can really push forward. Every donation, whether big or small, will make a real difference. You can be assured that not a single penny of your money will be wasted and also that this seed corn money will be very gratefully received.
We've got lots of rewards to thank you for your amazing support. If we reach our initial target then we will be donating 50% of anything we make over and above that figure, to local charities. To be able to give something back to our local community would be fantastic and we hope it's also a great incentive for you to donate.
Funds raised will enable us to better engage with the needs, hopes and aspirations of our communities.
In turn we will ensure that our communities' voices are heard.
Endorsements for our Crowdfunder
Brendan O'Hara MP for Argyll & Bute
"I'm delighted and proud to support this fundraising initiative. Not only does it seek to build on the great political work done by the SNP in recent years, but the fact that local charities will benefit shows how commmited the local SNP in Oban and Lorn are to their communities. At a time when the UK government are targeting the poorest and the most vulnerable in society, it's great that the SNP are making a political as well as a practical difference to the people of Oban and Lorn."
Michael Russell MSP for Argyll & Bute
"In every campaign early support and early activity is the yeast that makes the whole thing rise. Oban and Lorn SNP want to reach out and listen to the views of all those who live in that fantastic area. To do so they need to raise new funds and find new ways of doing things. I am delighted to be part of that and delighted also to give Oban and Lorn branch members and their kickstarter fund every support I can."
Mike MacKenzie MSP for Highlands & Islands
"The SNP are committed to creating a fairer and more prosperous country for everyone in Scotland. Help us to help you, in Oban and Lorn, by making a small donation."
