Skye Alexandra House

A bespoke service for vulnerable young women, providing residential, family support/mediation services and workshops to empower young women.

Project aim

Working with young vulnerable women we aim to empower the future generation of women to realise their potential by introducing them to opportunities.

About the project

Skye Alexandra House is a bespoke service designed to meet the needs of vulnerable young women. We are passionate about the growth and personal development of young women. We use the metaphor of the developing butterfly to represent that "change takes time". Skye Alexandra House is a place where young women live, learn and grow.

We provide 24 hour around the clock semi-independent residential care, family support/mediation and workshops creating awareness around sexual exploitation, domestic violence, bullying and FGM, whilst promoting personal development, personal well-being, life-skills and help preparing for further work and education.

We have an ‘Inspiring Butterflies Enterprise Programme’ which gives young women the chance to start their own business. For instance last year some of our girls on the programme ran an Alice In Wonderland themed stall in the heart of Croydon selling cupcakes, smoothies and juices. We have been given the opportunity to run it again this year thanks to Croydon market inspector Fiona Woodcock, who stated that the girls brought “a great energy” to the market.

Some of our girls have had the chance to do work experience at Rinse fm, with some inspirational female mentors at Viacom also eagerly awaiting the chance to provide the next set of girls with work experience.

At Skye Alexandra House we are about creating opportunities to looked after children, care leavers and vulnerable young women to live life despite their disadvantages. This helps them understand that they are not a product of their environment, but they too have what it takes to succeed in life.

We are trying to raise funds to keep the house open as we are still waiting to get girls placed inside the house by social services. We also require funds for Skye Alexandra House CIC programme ‘Inspiring Butterflies’ which will be launching in July 2015. Although we have secured the market space again this year, we are in need funds for equipment to take the girls out on outings/residential trip and to plan their event where they get the opportunity to showcase all in which they have learned on the programme. This programme will run on every school holiday and half term, as this is when young people usually have nothing to do.

Our future aim is to have more homes across the UK and internationally to create worldwide awareness on the sexual exploitation of vulnerable young women.
