The Story

When your homeland has been ravaged by war and you risk persecution, what choice do you have, but to leave? It is estimated that more than 50 million displaced people worldwide are fleeing conflict, poverty or persecution. Many embark on dangerous journeys in a bid for survival...

 

 

The Project

Shamas is a short film set in England and taking place against the backdrop of a mass refugee crisis. Amongst the chaos and uncertainty of what lies ahead, is one young man who must question his own humanity when his need to survive takes precedence. How far is he willing to go? 

 

Location

The film will be shot in Oxfordshire at locations including Didcot Railway Centre and involves a talented team of diverse young filmmakers who have come together to realise this project to its fullest potential.

 

 

Who are we?

Community based production company Resource Productions are working with award winning filmmaker Myriam Raja and Producer Dominique Unsworth to make this short film, which seeks to convey the universal need for safety... but at a cost.

 

Director - Myriam Raja

Born in Paris, to Pakistani parents, Myriam moved to England at the age of 11 and began making films aged 14. Her first film was screened at the Leeds Young People’s Film Festival and she has since gone on to have several of her shorts screened at various film festivals across the world, including Chicago Film Festival, Auburn International Film Festival, London Short Film Festival and most recently the London Asian Film Festival.

Myriam graduated last year from the Arts University Bournemouth with a degree in Film Production and her graduation film 'Tehzeeb' recently won Best Student Drama at the regional RTS Awards. She was also selected for the Random Acts Ignition Netowrk 'FLARE' strand and directed the short film 'Khadejah', which was produced by Dom.

 

Producer - Dominique Unsworth

Dom is Founder and MD of Resource Productions Ltd and has been Producing videos and shorts for over 15 years. In that time she has identified, supported and trained-up a wide range of young filmmakers through programmes including Pinewood Young Filmmakers, BFI Film Academies and 4Talent. Her aim is to produce culturally diverse, thought-provoking audio-visual content that gives a voice to those least likely to be heard and thereby help effect social change.

 

Cinematographer - Angus Mitchell

Angus started as a camera assistant for popular BBC daytime television drama Doctors in 2013, and has since worked on several BBC dramas including Moving On, The Coroner and Poldark as a trainee and assistant, whilst also undertaking studies in Television Production at Bournemouth University – from which he recently obtained first class honours from. Recently, Angus has has the opportunity to enter the motion picture side of the industry, and is currently on a production shooting at Pinewood Studios as a camera trainee. Alongside this, Angus is a freelance cameraman, and one day aspires to light feature films and television. Angus recently worked with director Oliver Deacon on short film Brackish Water, for which Angus won the Bill Vinten Guild of Television Cameramen prize for his lighting and camerawork. Brackish Water was also nominated for an RTS award in 2016.

 

1st Assistant Director - Andrew St Maur

Andrew attended the University of Central Lancashire film production course, aiming to develop his skills as a Director. This led him to direct a feature film in his second year as part of the course, as well as numerous short films and he achieved a first class honours degree. He is now looking to develop his own production company focusing mainly on short film productions. Andrew is a Trustee for Resource Youth Film CIO and was 1st AD for two Random Acts Ignition Network films for Screen South and Fly Film. 

 

Art Director - Holly Nicholds

Holly recently graduated from the Arts University Bournemouth with a degree in Film Production specialising in Set Design. She uses a mix of mediums and materials in a contemporary and innovative way, enjoys creating new ideas and concepts to brief and has an integral role in the physical execution on every project, including construction, painting and prop making. Holly has worked with Myriam on a number of projects most recently the Random Acts Ignition Network 'Khadejah'.

 

Costume Designer - Rebecca Jo Lesley

Rebecca is a costume designer based in Berkshire. Her first internship was with GRAMPUS Heritage and since she has had experience in small roles with the BBC, Shakespeare's Globe theatre, Sky and Angels The Costumiers. Rebecca has been the designer for short and feature length films, working a few times with Resource Productions for the Random Acts Ignition Network collaboration with Screen South and the Arts Council England. Hopefully three short films that she has designed for will be broadcast on television this year. She is currently part of the Sara Putt Associates Trainee Scheme.

 

Sound Recordist & Designer - Philip Moroz

Philip specialises in sound editing and sound design and in 2013, while at University, he launched an independent sound effects production team 'noisecreations' along with Callum Tennick to provide sound effects collections from their online store . Whilst working freelance on several feature films, short films, documentaries and company promotion videos, he has also studied at Solent University gaining a 1st Class Honours degree in 'Sound for Film, Television and Games'.

 

Editor - Marcus Parker-Wood

Marcus graduated from the Arts University Bournemouth in 2015 and since then has gone on to freelance for various independent productions and companies. Recently, his graduation film 'La Deriva Dei Continenti' has picked up the Royal Television Society Southern Student Award for Best Factual and has been very succesful in its festival run.

 

Composer - Dhruv Goel

Los Angeles based film/video composer and vocalist. A graduate from Berklee College of Music, Dhruv has also trained in the Dagar tradition of Dhrupad singing (Indian Classical) with Pandit Nirmalaya Dey (India) and in jazz improvisation with Lisa Thorson (USA). He has scored various documentaries and shared the stage with artists like Oscar winning composer A. R. Rahman and Clinton Cerejo.

 

Resource Productions Team

Alex, Oliver, Amanda and Ellis form the full-time staff team at Resource Productions' office in Slough, Berkshire, UK.
