The Way of the Horse has been helping vulnerable, disadvantaged and disabled children and adults for two years. In that time, we have helped over 100 children to overcome their psychological, physical and developmental challenges and we now work with over 30 families a week. We also run many courses and therapy sessions for adults. At The Way of the Horse extraordinary healing and progress can happen. So far, our support has enabled:
- A non-verbal autistic boy to find his voice
- A girl with a developmental disorder to begin to form sentences and engage more with her environment.
- Children who haven't attended school in many months to return to learning and education
- Boys with ADHD to learn to focus and channel their energy
- A woman who has been bereaved of a child to begin to heal
- A woman with drug and alcohol issues to reduce her dependencies
- Many teenagers and adults with anxiety and depression to find ways to overcome their conditions.
- Children and adults who have suffered abuse and neglect to move forward positively with their lives
- And many, many more which we don't have the space to list here.
Unfortunately, we are about to lose our rented premises and need a new home, otherwise all of these children, the children’s families and many vulnerable adults, will find themselves without the support they rely on.
Who we are:
The Way of the Horse is an Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL) and Therapy centre dedicated to helping children and adults with emotional, behavioural and mental health problems. Many of those we help are from disadvantaged backgrounds and/or have experienced significant trauma. The centre is run by Dina Hooton and her team of dedicated staff and volunteers. Dina is a highly trained EFL and therapy practitioner with many years’ experience helping both humans and horses.
What we do:
We provide an interactive, innovative learning format that actively engages horses in the work of human development and healing. We teach personal empowerment, self-compassion, authentic communication, community building, mindfulness and overcoming psychological challenges. We do important work in a climate of severely reduced mental health, social and disability care funding. Often, we can provide other routes to healing where traditional treatment pathways have failed.
In addition to our work with humans, many of our horses are rescued and would have faced uncertain futures if they had not found their new vocation at our centre. Our rescued horses now save humans. At the centre, we also provide training in many welfare-orientated horse training techniques, such as clicker training.
Why we need your help:
The reason we are asking for your donations is that we are losing our rented premises for the second time. Demand means that we have also outgrown them. To secure our future, we need our own property, even if it is just a patch of land that we can develop over time. Please donate; even a small amount can help us, bit by bit, towards the cost of some land or the deposit on a mortgage. We are also putting in money ourselves, but we all know how expensive land is in the UK.
Please help us continue our important work within our community.
