Bella is a beautiful golden Cocker Spaniel.
She was born in Attleborough, Norfolk on the 1st April 2005.
She has been an important part of our family since she was 9 weeks old.
She loves cheese, going on walks and carrying things (socks, shoes etc..) around.
Bella means beautiful in Italian.
We noticed Bella struggling to walk. At first we thought it was down to her age but then we noticed she wasn't putting any weight on her right hand side back leg. We checked for thorns or cuts on her paws but there wasn't any. Her back legs then started giving way and she has collapsed on a number of occassions.
We took Bella to the Vet and she was diagnosed with Cranial Cruciate Ligament faliure (ruptured knee ligament). They don't know why it happened but it's apparently quite common. She has been put on pain killers and has been referred for surgery.
Bella requires surgery.
There are 2 types of surgery and both types involve surgical entry into the knee joint itself to remove the torn remants of ligament.
They are both highly successful procedures resulting in significant improvement in limb function.
The action of the ligament is replaced using a pre-tensioned nylon ligament and stainless steel crimp which is implanted
around the joint to act as a stabiliser and scaffold for fibrous tissue formation.
The Cranial Thrust Force is neutralised during weight bearing by permanently altering the angle of the load bearing platform (Tibial Plateau) at the top of the Tibia with a precise, gliding bone cut which is repaired using a special plate and screws. In some smaller dogs, a small wedge of bone is removed to alter the tibial plateau angle; this procedure is known as a CCWO surgery.
Our vet (All Creatures) estimated that the surgery would cost around £1500.00, however, I have just spoken Grove Referrals and they have quoted £3600.00.
Initial Consultation £300.00, Operation £3000.00, Post Op Consultation £300.00
If Bella doesn't have the surgery she will be in constant pain and we will have no option but to put her to sleep. This doesn't bare thinking about. My children and I are already devastated.
Bella has had pet insurance for most of her life, however, I forgot to renew it last year so she is not insured for this operation. I am also unable to take out a loan. This really is my only option.
