A film about the mental, physical and social change we can make when we attempt physical and mental challenges we're not sure we can achieve

Project aim

The Adventure Syndicate and Velocity Cafe and Bicycle Workshop are joining forces to make a film about the mental, physical and social possibilities made available to us when we attempt things we initially don't think we are capable of.

Velocity's Cycle to Health Project uses cycling to improve women's mental well being and increase social inclusion. It works with complete beginners to competent cyclists who are united by feelings of low confidence or motivation, anxiety, isolation or low mood. By the women's own account it is a life changing project increasing confidence, self belief, mental wellbeing and creating a sense of community.

The Adventure Syndicate are a group of elite female athletes who have come together to inspire and enable people to challenge what they think they are capable of achieving. They recently set the record for the North Coast 500, riding the 500 miles in just 36 hours.

We are joining together to create this film which will be used in a series of winter lectures all over the UK and at film festivals. Parallels between the leaps of faith and lessons in perseverance we learn during ambitious physical exploits and during our fight for improved mental health can be easily drawn. The Adventure Syndicate and Velocity Cafe and Bicycle Workshop want to make a film that splices the hopes, fears, doubts and dark moments we all feel during our endurance adventures with those experienced by the many of us who suffer from depression and anxiety.

We also aim to draw parallels between our resilience, personal and group strength, tenacity and positive mindset and show that in both cases, these qualities help us to triumph.

The film will include stunning footage from the Adventure Syndicate's North Coast 500 (click to see the teaser) record breaking attempt as well as women from Velocity's Cycle to Health Project. From elite athletes at the peak of their fitness to women re-learning the physical ability and re-gaining the mental confidence to ride for the first time in years, this film will be incredibly powerful and reach many more people, helping them to aim higher, reach further and live a fuller and more enriching life.
