In September 2011, Reduced Circumstances (RC) will be staging Phaedra’s Love by Sarah Kane in the main house of the Arcola Theatre’s thriving new venue, directed by long-time friend and Associate Director of the company Bronwen Carr.
A visceral, savagely funny deconstruction of a royal family in disarray and a society on the brink of ruin Phaedra’s Love is perhaps even more relevant now than it was when Kane first wrote it:
‘News. Another rape. Child murdered. War somewhere. Few thousand jobs gone. But none of this matters ‘cause it’s a royal birthday.’
Since its inception, RC has been committed to combining artistic excellence with creating opportunities for emerging talent and this production will be no exception. By casting experienced West End leads alongside up-and-coming talent, RC hope to create an environment much missed since the decline of subsidised and regional theatre, where previous generations of artists had the opportunity to develop their craft and launch their careers.
The latest cuts to arts funding and the resultant increase in pressure on other revenue sources pose a huge threat to the company being able to realise these ideals. RC has worked hard and earned a third of the show’s budget offering career development services to performers in line with the company aims. Additional finance is being sought both through applications to the Arts Council and other trusts and by applying creative thinking to the planning of fundraising events.
The company are now seeking to raise an extra £1000 with your help!
