To give children in the Kibera slums the opportunity to cycle, learn bike maintenance and a support system for a better future

by RRBF in Kibera

Project aim

With limited access to secondary schools and few out of school activities, young boys and girls in the Kenyan slums are prone to bad influences - drugs, crime, glue sniffing, gangs, prostitution.

The Kibera Cycling Club will give them the opportunity to cycle safely, learn bike maintenance, compete, have access to laptops to support their studies and spend time with the Club mentors.

About the project

The club will be based at the Raila Education Centre school in Kibera, run by professional and volunteer cyclists from Safari Simbaz.  The Simbaz are the brainchild of David Kinjah, kenya's best known and most successful cyclist; mentor to Chris Froome and a man of infectious energy.  Kinjah was a speaker at our workshop event in Nairobi in 2014, giving his time freely to insire the children we sponsor.

Through the Simbaz, Kinjah aims to unearth hidden talent and develop cyclists in disadvantaged communities and provide support structures to help these children fulfill their potential, not just in sport.  Our partnership with Safari Simbaz gives chidlren from the slums this opportunity for the first time.

The Red Rubber Ball Foundation is a UK registered charity (1140443) formed in 2010 to establish education projects primarily in Africa and currently focusing on Kenya.

We currently have a few long term projects up and running including:

- Secondary School Scholarships - with 84 children supported through secondary school and now on to university and college

- An educational farm, near Lake Victoria - a feeding programme for the local primary schhol means children get a hot meal each day

- Football Academy - established and now self-financing has benefited over 600 children each year.
