Dumfriesshire needs someone who gets things done. It needs a positive voice, championing its people in parliament, the media and the country. Joan McAlpine is a list MSP who lives in Dumfries and already speaks up for Southern Scotland. Joan was nominated as a Community MSP of the Year for her campaign against fracking in the village of Canonbie. She has recently spoken up for individuals and businesses affected by flooding, ensuring they get the correct payments. She even took up a mop herself! Joan is a former Scottish Journalist of the Year and was deputy editor of the respected Herald newspaper. She has an honours degree in economic history from Glasgow University and her parliamentary interests include unpaid carers, welfare reform, people with learning disability, the arts and economic development. She regularly uses her national newspaper column to promote events and organisations in Dumfriesshire, as well as raising their concerns repeatedly in parliament. She understands the diverse nature of the constituency, from Dumfries to Lockerbie, Annan, Moffat, Sanquhar, Kirkconnel, Kelloholm, Thornhill, Moniaive, Langholm, Gretna and the surrounding villages. Joan was an early backer of The Big Burns Supper, Nithraid and the renovation of the Theatre Royal. She regularly attends charity and community events across the region. Labour and the Tories have represented Dumfriesshire for as long as anyone can remember. It's time to step up a gear. It's time to make Joan McAlpine the constituency MSP - and keep Dumfriesshire moving forward.
