I was a candidate in yesterday's (8 June) snap General Election for the Liberal Democrats in Ashton-under-Lyne constituency in Greater Manchester. Ashton-under-Lyne is where Angela Rayner, the Labour shadow education secretary, has her seat. I stood as a candidate in this seat for the second time because I believe that even in a safe Labour constituency voters should still have the chance to choose something different.
That said, I got (quite a lot) less than 1000 votes (they really seem to like Angela a lot). However, like so many of the 'paper' candidates from all parties across the country I am proud to have stuck my head above the parapet for the second time in two years and will do so again if asked.
The tiny local Lib Dem party kindly put up the £500 deposit which I unfortunately lost. I am hoping to raise some if not all of that back to make sure they aren't out of pocket and will hugely appreciate any help along the way!
