Rainbow Horses works with children with autism or social and emotional difficulties. We are an alternative education provider working with children who are out of school. This project is to allow us to reach children in schools and enable them to work with our horses in small groups to explore issues such as bullying, anxiety, self-esteem, confidence, behaviour and mindfulness. Horses and the outdoor environment have been shown to improve emotional wellbeing and the mental health of children in school is an area of increasing concern. Being with the horses in a herd as they exhibit their natural behaviour gives children the opportunity to observe and think about the meaning of the behaviour. They can then relate this to experiences in their lives and increase their understanding of social relationships and how they relate to others. Through working with the horses the children are also enabled to explore their own feelings and develop a greater understanding of their emotions as well as strategies such as mindfulness for coping with difficult emotions.
