New stretch target
Our stretch target is £600
Any additional money raised will go towards materials for the Totnes Pride 2014 day event.
We have been inspired to create our own rainbow crossing by cities like London and Brighton who have created their own temporary rainbow crossings during the week of their Pride events to celebrate diversity and raise awareness about the issues still faced by the lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, questioning and/or intersex (LGBTQI) community.
Our rainbow crossing is a temporary piece of art that will raise awareness about Totnes Pride on a national level and will put Totnes on the map as a town that celebrates equality and diversity. It will be the first of its kind for a rural town.
Proud2Be is a community-led non-for-profit organisation that seeks to empower LGBTQI people to be proud of who they are. We achieve this by facilitating welcoming, safe & inclusive social opportunities & Pride events, running pro-active multimedia campaigns, providing educational workshops and a consultancy service, whilst maintaining a strong media presence.
We have a number of high profile LGBTQI public figures who support Proud2Be including; Stephen Fry, Peter Tatchell, Christine Burns MBE, Suran Dickson, Sir Ian Mckellen and Michael Cashman MEP.
As an organisation we are really aware of the issues that face LGBTQI people living in rural areas, Totnes Pride has been an enormous step forward for our community and last year attracted 900 people. This year we expect more.
In order to create the most beautiful and professional job we have sourced the correct materials and have a local artist leading the team of people who will create the crossing. We are crowdfunding to raise the money for the materials to install the crossing, namely the chalks that will be used.
Supporter of the initiative, County Councillor Robert Vint said "I am currently involved with plans for several real zebra crossings around the town and am delighted to also lend my support to this symbolic crossing to promote equality. Both projects, in their own ways, should help make the town a safer, friendlier and more inclusive place for all."
We are inviting you to sponsor the crossing. You could donate £10.00 for a listing on our website, £25.00 for your name to appear on the crossing or £50.00 for your name to appear on the crossing and a colour photograph of the crossing.
