Project Nelhuayotl is a social reintegration programme for socially isolated and vulnerable young people in Mexico City.
The project is a community non-profit cafe which will provide jobs, training, life skills and the chance to finish school for 16-20 year olds with a history of homelessness and addiction. The most vital part of the project will be providing a caring and supportive environment for the young people to work in and the access to our life skills programme which will support young people to regenerate or create family links and social networks and to develop skills and strategies for effective communication, problem solving, decison making, impulse control and managing emotions, and coping with addiction. They will also be actively encouraged to identify postive ways to enjoy their free time and to take part in creative, sporting and other leisure activities.
Currently, the young people we want to support are merely surviving on the edges of society, exposed to a world of violence, exploitation and abuse. We aim to help these young people to learn the practical and emotional skills they need to build a life away from the streets and to create a positive future as active participants in Mexican society.
