Hello

May i introduce myself as a leader from the 4th Poplar scout group

2 of the 4th Poplar scouts Lily & Kathleen are off to Kanderstag Switzerland in August 2017 as part of the scout association 90th Birthday celebrations

They are very active members of the 4th Poplar Scout Group East London and play an active role in our local community

They have already raised £500 between themselves and have a sponsor swimathon and Hike planned

We are asking the local community and businesses to help the girls succeed their target

Dear Sir or Madam:

The 4th Poplar Scout Group has been serving young people in around the Poplar area since August 1928. As a pre-empted, year long, celebration of our 90th birthday the Scouts chose to undertake an expedition to Switzerland in August for past and current Scouts from the troop.

This August we’ll be taking young people aged 11-18 along with 7 adult volunteers (who are giving up their work holidays) for 11 nights at Kandersteg International Scout Centre in the Swiss Alps. During this time they’ll take part in overnight hikes to remote huts in the Alps, go rock climbing, explore the Swiss countryside and meet over 1000 other Scouts from all corners of the world in a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Whilst planning the trip last year we had allowed for inflation and the worst exchange rate for Swiss Francs in the last 20 years, however, given the current value of Sterling we’re having to raise the cost of the trip from £650 to £700 per person due to an extra 7% increase in the cost of our food and activity budget. This means an extra £1,650 needs to be fundraised by the group.

As you might expect, the leaders and young people of the 4th Poplar embody the massive diversity within the community of the modern East End. In trying to ease the cost of the trip on those families attending we’re writing to businesses like yours to see whether you’re able to help make a donation towards our Expedition Fund.

To offer some idea of where the money is going to be spent:
● A donation of £390 would pay for the transport and camping fees for one of our Scouts
● £208 would pay for all of the badges that the group will be earning during their trip
● £80 would pay for one of our Scouts to take part in all of the activities planned
● Or just £5 would pay for a UK Scarf for one of our group so that everyone can see which country they’re from.

Because we’re registered for Gift Aid we’re able to claim an extra 25% from the government on any personal donation made, but this also means we’re also registered as a charity with HMRC for tax purposes on any business donations.

A massive thank you in advance for any help that you’re able to give our Scouts in achieving their plan that’s been over a year in the making.

Yours faithfully,

Ryan Wall
