What& 39;s it about?
For over 18 months I have been shadowing various units of the Operations Division of West Yorkshire Police, covering a photography project about the work they carry out. The aim of this project has been to show the public the kind of work that the officers of these units do to keep our communities safer. I feel that given the kind of press that often surrounds the Police, especially over recent months, this is a highly relevant body of work that I believe will draw a lot of interest from the public.
After completing my BA Photography degree in 2008 I started thinking about different project ideas I could start, and what would be of interest to the public. At the start of 2009 I started looking into this project by writing to some of the units I was interested in photographing. My enquiries were passed on to a member of staff at the Press Office who supported the idea from the beginning. After more meetings and planning, I finally started shooting the project in March of 2010, which continued up until August of this year when I completed my last photography visit with the Police.
I spent time photographing seven units in total; Dog Section, Air Operations, Underwater Search Unit, Motorway Unit, Mounted Section, Operational Support Unit and Firearms Support Unit. As the titles of each unit suggests, the nature of the work carried out in this Division is varied and diverse, and all make for an interesting visual story. I wanted to take photographs that reflected the work of the officers with the aim of showing the public what it is that these important units do. I think it is vital that this kind of public sector work is appreciated, and celebrated through photography.
How will the money be spent?
Based on the best estimates that I have sourced, the exhibition will approximately cost as follows:
£500- x16 750mm x 500mm mounted prints on 5mm foamex.
£220- x500 A3 posters
£80- x1000 A6 flyers
£70- x100 A6 invites
£130- x500 A5 leaflets (folded into A6)
£100- x18 bottles of wine and cartons of fruit juice for drinks reception
This was an exciting project and one that will be seen by hundreds of people. The work will be exhibited in Leeds Town Hall from the 28th October to the 30th December 2011, open 9am to 4:30pm Monday to Saturday.
I believe this exhibition will be a success, and one that I can achieve with interest and support from funders like you. Your contribution will be greatly appreciated, and I look forward to rewarding you!
Thank you for considering my pitch!
