Maisha is an innovative charity that focuses on offering adolescence from the Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya, education opportunities in the creative & vocational fields. We took 4 leading international artists into the slum for a week in 2010 to capture the LIFE of Kibera in paintings and photography. We currently have an extensive art portfolio of strong and inspiring artwork that tells real stories from life and people of Kibera.
MAISHA means & 39;LIFE& 39; in Swahili
We have sold a portion of this artwork portfolio in 2011 at our launch exhibition at the Mount St Galleries in London and now we need to sell more and communicate with a wider audience. We need your help to raise £1000 so we can cover the costs of an exhibition at The Other Art Fair 25-28th April 2013.
The money raised will pay for our exhibition stand to showcase paintings and photographs and provide a platform for communication with over 2500 visitors each day over 4 days. The Other Art Fair are also offering to support us with PR and marketing at no additional cost as they love our project. At this exhibition we will have the opportunity to talk about the charity and sell more artwork. This will fund the development of Maisha& 39;s education platform in Nairobi for teenagers of the slum. We will be at the exhibition each day with special features from painter James Hart Dyke and the photographers.
On our first artist trip to Kibera in 2010 we held 2 creative workshops in the slum - one in photograhy with photographer Fabrice Paget and one in 3D drawing with English painter James Hart Dyke. We gave a group of teens from St Johns school 20 disposable cameras so they could capture their own lives in Kibera and learn new skills. We held a mini exhibition at the school so they could share their stories behind the photographs. You can watch clips from these interviews in our behind the scenes videos here: https://vimeo.com/15861244 and this longer edit: https://vimeo.com/16118742
